Sipsmith, pioneers of the modern craft gin movement, proudly unveil Origin 1639 Gin, an exclusive limited edition that challenges the narrative of gin’s origins.
This exceptional spirit, crafted from a 1639 recipe, offers compelling evidence that gin’s true birthplace is England, not Holland as widely believed.
Launching in both the UK and Germany, Origin 1639 Gin is inspired by a groundbreaking discovery in “The Distiller of London”, a 1639 manual unearthed by Sipsmith Master Distiller Jared Brown and drinks historian Anistatia Miller.
The couple deciphered 34 coded formulas, finding one that produced a remarkably balanced spirit of juniper berry, citrus and spice – the closest ancestor to London Dry Gin found in print.

This historic recipe, detailed in Brown and Miller’s book “A Most Noble Water: Revisiting the Origins of English Gin”, effectively rewrites gin’s origin story, proving its English roots.
Sipsmith Origin 1639 Gin faithfully recreates this centuries-old recipe using traditional 17th-century methods.
Infused with raspberries and strawberries, then rested in oak barrels, it boasts a juniper-forward profile with bright berry notes and a spiced backbone.
This limited edition not only offers a unique tasting experience but serves as a liquid testament to gin’s true heritage – a spirit as English as it was originally “gin-tended”.
Sipsmith Master Distiller, Jared Brown says: “We were thrilled to discover that the first recipe in the UK to combine juniper, citrus, and spice, the modern structure of gin, was published in 1639.
“Through meticulous research by myself and Anistatia Miller, this recipe proves that gin did, in fact, originate in England.
“We clamoured to get into the distillery to see if we could revive the recipe! For Sipsmith, the chance to write a whole new chapter in the story of gin by going back to its very inception? Nothing could be more exciting than that.”
Sipsmith Origin 1639 Gin is available online directly from sipsmith.com, in selected stores nationwide including Harvey Nichols, John Lewis, Waitrose and Majestic, with an RSP of £38.
