American fast-food chain Wendy’s has confirmed plans to open a new restaurant on Aberdeen’s Union Street, investing £450,000 to transform a former JD Sports unit into its latest UK outlet.

This marks a strategic step in the Ohio-based company’s aggressive expansion across Scotland, with additional branches planned for Glasgow and Dundee.

Aberdeen’s Union Street Transformation
The proposed Aberdeen branch will occupy a prime spot adjacent to Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, revitalising a vacant retail space in the city centre.

Nottingham-based QSR Projects, specialists in quick-service restaurants, submitted the building warrant for the refurbishment, which includes modernising the two-floor unit to accommodate dining areas, self-service kiosks, and staff facilities.

The move aligns with recent efforts to attract high-profile brands to Union Street, following challenges such as bus-gate controversies and shop closures.

Scottish Expansion Gains Momentum
Wendy’s Scottish ambitions extend beyond Aberdeen:

  • Glasgow: The chain’s first Scottish location is slated for Sauchiehall Street, with plans to install illuminated signage and a heritage-style façade in a B-listed building.
  • Dundee: A planning application has been lodged to convert the former TGI Fridays unit on Reform Street, leveraging the city’s growing retail profile.
  • Franchise Partnerships: Wendy’s recently signed a development agreement with Square Burgers, a franchise partner, to accelerate its growth across Scotland.

This Scottish push forms part of Wendy’s broader UK strategy, which aims to operate 400 restaurants nationwide by 2027.

The chain, which re-entered the UK market in 2021 after a 22-year hiatus, currently has over 30 locations, including recent openings in Newcastle, Colchester, and London.

Local Reactions and Economic Impact
While some Aberdeen residents argue Union Street “doesn’t need another fast-food chain”, supporters highlight the potential for job creation and increased footfall. The £450,000 investment underscores Wendy’s commitment to high-street regeneration, mirroring successful launches of Tim Hortons and Popeyes in the region.

Menu and Sustainability Focus
The Aberdeen branch will feature Wendy’s signature square beef patties, Baconator® fries, and Frosty® desserts, alongside UK-exclusive items like the Avocado Chicken Club.

The company emphasises locally sourced ingredients, with British beef and daily-prepared salads forming core menu components.

With applications pending in Glasgow and Dundee, Wendy’s Scottish expansion signals a renewed confidence in the UK fast-food market, challenging established rivals like McDonald’s and Burger King. The Aberdeen outlet’s progress can be tracked via Aberdeen City Council’s planning portal.
