After a six-year closure, North Berwick’s former County Hotel is poised for a major revival, thanks to an £850,000 investment from Star Pubs and Discovery Group.

The historic venue, which closed its doors in the summer of 2019, will reopen this autumn under the new name ‘The Law’, inspired by the town’s famous hill.

The extensive refurbishment will see the Category C listed building reimagined as a top-quality, family and dog-friendly destination.

Plans include two distinct bars, a restaurant with its own bar, a function space, and 11 en suite letting rooms.

One of the standout features will be a 100-seater garden, one of the largest in North Berwick designed to attract both locals and visitors.

The project, which marks Discovery Group’s sixteenth venue and its first long-term lease with Star Pubs, is expected to create 25 new jobs in the area.

The venue’s new layout will include a contemporary bar at the front, equipped with screens for sports such as golf and rugby, and a second bar in a converted stable at the rear, complete with a pizza oven and modern design that highlights original features like stable doors, beams, and stone walls.

The reopening follows approval from the East Lothian Licensing Board, which also allowed for an outdoor garden area and extended operating hours.

While some neighbours had raised concerns about potential noise and smoking, additional conditions have been put in place to address these issues.

One local resident, previously troubled by the building’s decline, welcomed the plans, expressing relief that the site would once again become a well-operated asset to the community.

Discovery Group director Steven Winton, said: “People have been concerned about The County Hotel’s future and there’s lots of excitement about the plans for it – but the town has a real sense of community and residents are very supportive.

“We want to bring out all The County Hotel’s potential and add to the diverse range of independently run hospitality businesses and shops that help make North Berwick such a special place.”

The Law is expected to open its doors by early September, offering a revitalised social hub for North Berwick and its many visitors.
