The UK is a nation of foodies. In fact, nearly a quarter of UK adults eat out for dinner once a week (23%) as revealed by research by the Food Standards Agency. To highlight our love for food and the booming restaurant scenes in our cities, TransPennine Express has used social, search and TripAdvisor data to uncover the UK’s top foodie destinations, with Scotland’s second city coming out on top.
- Glasgow has over 1.3k restaurants found throughout the city, with its top-rated establishments having over 30k excellent reviews on TripAdvisor combined
- There are nearly 59k monthly searches for restaurants in Glasgow, highlighting its popularity as a foodie destination
- Over 2k posts of the delicious dishes served in Glasgow have been shared on Instagram
Thanks to its thriving food scene, Glasgow is also the go-to city for highly rated Indian and Chinese restaurants, having the most establishments of any Scottish and Northern city (204 Indian, 203 Chinese).
It is no surprise that it is viewed so highly for those cuisines, with the many award-winning restaurants that call Glasgow home, such as the top-rated Green Gates Indian Restaurant, found on Candleriggs. This local favourite serves authentic, home-style North and South Indian cuisine with a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. Or Opium on Hope Street, a city-centre gem that blends traditional dim sum with modern Asian fusion in a stylish, intimate setting.
