International Flavors: The market is designed to host a diverse range of international-style food and drink outlets, ensuring visitors can indulge in a plethora of flavours from around the world. From tantalising street food to gourmet delicacies, Aberdeen’s new market will cater to every palate.

Local Produce: One of the standout features of this market is its emphasis on promoting local produce and goods. Visitors can look forward to exploring stalls laden with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From artisan cheeses to freshly baked bread, Aberdeen’s market will be a haven for food enthusiasts keen on supporting local producers.

Flexible and Seasonal Offerings: The market’s design includes a mix of fixed indoor units of various sizes alongside space for temporary and pop-up facilities. This flexibility ensures a dynamic culinary landscape, allowing vendors to adapt their offerings according to seasonal produce and changing food trends. Visitors can anticipate a delightful variety with every visit.

Open Events Space: An external canopy was removed to create a flexible open events space, opening up the site and surrounding areas. This space promises a vibrant atmosphere, perfect for food festivals, live music, and other community events, making the market not just a culinary destination but also a cultural hub.

Councillor Ciaran McRae, the Committee Convener, expressed his enthusiasm about the project: “It is to be welcomed, the committee members agreed unanimously to the revised planning application today. The market development will create a vibrant and exciting new destination for people to visit in the city centre, as well as create an improved connection between Union Street, The Green, and the bus and train stations.”

The market’s design enhancements include improved landscaping and accessibility at the Market Street entrance, extending the external public space and enhancing the access route. Additionally, lifts and escalators have been moved inside the market hall, ensuring weather protection and convenience for visitors.

This market, a critical component of the “Heart of the City” area identified in the approved City Centre Masterplan, aims to reinstate the central role of Union Street in the city’s life. The council’s vision is not only to create a bustling shopping destination but also a place for diverse city activities, with food taking centre stage.

The City Council, in collaboration with the UK Levelling Up Fund, has allocated £20 million for the development of the new market building and nearby streetscaping. This substantial investment underscores the city’s commitment to creating a thriving culinary haven for both locals and visitors.

As the Aberdeen market building takes shape, food enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the day when they can explore its bustling stalls, savour international delicacies, support local producers, and revel in the vibrant culinary atmosphere. Aberdeen’s culinary scene is about to get a delicious upgrade, and the city can’t wait to share it with the world.
