Black Sheep Coffee has officially opened the doors of its long-awaited second Aberdeen branch, located prominently at the corner of Market Street and Union Street.

The launch, which took place this morning (29 July 2025), marks a key milestone in the brand’s expansion across Scotland, with this becoming its 18th outlet nationwide and the second in the Granite City, joining its established Union Square store just a short walk away.

Today’s launch drew a steady stream of curious passers-by, many of whom stopped in for the store’s £1 coffee opening offer, available via the Black Sheep app.

The building, which had lain empty since Caffè Nero vacated the premises in May 2023, was taken over by Black Sheep Coffee more than two years ago.

Franchisee David Moore, part of the MDM Group, spoke to Larder Magazine at the launch. He explained that while the location had previously attracted local curiosity due to the delay, his team only took on the lease in May 2025, and had “managed to get the store fully opened within three months”.

Commenting on the store’s distinct character, Moore said: “The vibe we’ve created here is quite different to what other stores have. After the shop fit is completed, graffiti artists are flown in from Barcelona with complete artistic licence to decorate the space. They spend time walking around Aberdeen to get a feel for the city, and the result is bespoke artwork that really captures the local spirit – from seagulls chasing waffles to a mural celebrating Aberdeen itself.”

The new store offers multiple ways to order, catering to both walk-in customers and those on the go.
“You can order at the bar, use our self-service kiosks, scan the QR codes at tables, or place an order ahead via the app while you’re on the bus,” said Moore.

The shop is currently card-only, though Moore noted they may adapt to taking cash depending on customer demand.

To celebrate the launch, customers were treated to tote bags, stickers and £1 coffees when ordering through the app, with the offer covering staples such as Americanos, lattes and cappuccinos.

Black Sheep Coffee has built a strong following through its ethically sourced, speciality-grade beans – including the UK’s first 100% Robusta – as well as a diverse menu that now includes Norwegian waffles, smoothies, and a new lemonade range with flavour-packed options such as lychee, passionfruit and matcha-lavender.

Moore added: “We’re excited to be part of the city centre’s regeneration and to bring something different to Union Street. The response from the local community has already been really encouraging.”
