Cocktail lovers are being invited to raise a glass this summer as Edinburgh prepares to host its first-ever Daiquiri Dash, a month-long celebration of one of the world’s best-loved rum cocktails.
Running from 1 July to 31 July, the event will see five bars across the capital team up with Angostura Rum to mark National Daiquiri Day on 19 July with a specially curated menu of daiquiri-inspired cocktails.
The Daiquiri Dash has been created by East Lothian cocktail enthusiast Emma Hazzard, who drew inspiration from the city’s successful Margarita Mile, launched by Edinburgh-based Signature Group earlier this year.
Working alongside Signature Group, Emma selected her five favourite cocktail venues to take part in the inaugural event. They include Cold Town House in the Grassmarket, Copper Blossom on George Street, The Boozy Cow on Frederick Street, Element on Rose Street and The Basement on Broughton Street.
Each venue will serve an exclusive daiquiri creation throughout July. Highlights include the Peaches ‘n’ Cream at The Boozy Cow, made with Angostura Rum, peach liqueur, cream soda, vanilla ice cream, acid solution and sugar syrup, while The Basement will offer The Godfather Part II, featuring Angostura Rum, banana liqueur, banana purée, lime juice and sugar syrup.
Participants can complete the Daiquiri Dash in any order, either in a single day or across the four-week campaign.
In a unique twist, cocktail fans are also encouraged to tackle the challenge on Strava using the hashtag #daqdash. Those who complete a route around Edinburgh in the shape of a cocktail glass during July will receive a free Daiquiri voucher, or a non-alcoholic alternative, to redeem during the campaign.
Emma Hazzard said: “I’m so excited to be teaming up with Edinburgh’s Signature Group to launch the city’s first Daiquiri Dash event in July.
“I’m a big fan of Signature venues and I loved taking part in their Margarita Mile event in February, so I came up with the idea of a Daiquiri Dash for the summer.
“I’ve just completed the Edinburgh Marathon and I’m already in training to do the New York Marathon in November, so we’ve decided to add the option of making it a Strava Challenge, too. Classic cocktails and fun, active events are the perfect mix for me.”
She added: “All the cocktail bars featured in the Daiquiri Dash are my top five favourites in Edinburgh. Copper Blossom is also great for Christmas celebrations and Cold Town House has an amazing new roof terrace, a fun photobooth and the best Neapolitan pizzas in town.”
David Smillie, drinks development manager for Signature Group, said: “We can’t wait to start shaking things up with the launch of Edinburgh’s first Daiquiri Dash this July, thanks to our VIP customer Emma Hazzard.
“We have five great cocktail bars to visit over four weeks, so people will get the chance to celebrate this classic cocktail throughout the month of July, as well as National Daiquiri Day on 19 July.
“With some of the best cocktail bars and bartenders in Edinburgh taking part, it’s the perfect time to get out and about with friends and family around Edinburgh this summer.”
Hannah McConnachie, head of business development for Signature Group, added: “We were thrilled to hear that Emma enjoyed our Margarita Mile so much that it inspired her to create her own brilliant Daiquiri Dash idea.
“It’s really important to us at Signature that we give our customers what they want, and this is exactly what we’ve done. We’re giving Emma her own X Factor moment at Signature and will now be rolling out her campaign across five of our most popular Edinburgh venues.”
