When the haar rolls in and the wind’s howling like a banshee, there’s nae better cure than a proper Scottish hot toddy.

This wee dram of heaven is just the ticket to chase away the winter chill and put a spring back in your step.

The hot toddy, a time-honoured Scottish remedy, has been warming the hearts and souls of Scots for generations.

It’s a simple yet magical blend of whisky, honey, lemon, and spices that’ll have you feeling right as rain in no time.

Ingredients

To craft this bonnie beverage, you’ll need:

  • 50ml Scotch whisky (a good single malt if you’re feeling flush)
  • 2 tsp heather honey
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • A wee pinch of nutmeg
  • 150ml boiling water

Method

  1. In a sturdy mug or glass tumbler, dollop in the heather honey and squeeze in the lemon juice.
  2. Pour in your chosen Scotch whisky and give it a good stir until the honey’s dissolved.
  3. Pop in the cinnamon stick and cloves.
  4. Top up with boiling water and gie it another wee stir.
  5. Leave it to steep for 3-5 minutes, letting the spices work their magic.
  6. Fish out the cloves (but keep the cinnamon stick for stirring), then sprinkle a wee pinch of nutmeg on top.
  7. Enjoy your toddy while it’s nice and hot.

A Wee Twist

For a true taste of Scotland, try adding a splash of Drambuie instead of honey. This whisky liqueur, infused with heather honey and herbs, adds a delightful sweetness and complexity to your toddy.
