The buttery. The rowie. The Aberdeen roll. Call it what you will, but that golden savoury snack is the stuff of North-east legend.

Bakers across Aberdeen city and Shire have each perfected their own recipes based on layers of pastry, butter and lard, but Six by Nico reckon they have discovered the perfect buttery to serve exclusively in their Union St restaurant.

Six by Nico have joined forces with Murdoch Allan, a family business serving up the finest baking treats for the past 30 years, to showcase the delicious buttery in their Aberdeen restaurant.

Paying homage to the humble snack’s origins as an alternative bread roll for fishermen to eat at sea, the buttery will be drizzled with homemade shellfish butter, and available as an accompaniment ‘snack’ to the main dishes.

The collaboration is the first of several that Six by Nico will be launching with a number of local Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire businesses over the coming months.

Chief Creative Officer, Andy Temple, said: “The buttery has stood the test of time, and for good reason.

“It’s the perfect fit for our Nostalgia menu – what Aberdonian doesn’t have fond memories of this legendary snack?!

“We’re very proud to partner with Murdoch Allan – as artisan bakers they have perfected their craft, and bake what we consider to be the ultimate buttery. We can’t wait to share it with all of our diners in Aberdeen.

“What makes this even more special is that the inspiration for incorporating the buttery in our menu came directly from some of our most loyal local customers feedback.”

The buttery will be served as part of the Nostalgia menu in Aberdeen’s Union St branch of Six by Nico, from Monday 16 December to 26 January.
