A Fife entrepreneur who struggled to find food she could safely eat has built an award-winning allergen-free food business that is now expanding across Scotland, with ambitions for wider UK growth.
Megan Murrie, founder of Glenrothes-based Nakey Bakey, launched the company after years of living with endometriosis and a nut allergy that left her frustrated by the lack of genuinely allergen-free, naturally made and low-sugar products available in supermarkets.
Determined to find a solution, she began creating her own granola recipes at home, carefully developing products that met her dietary needs without compromising on taste or nutrition.
What started as a personal solution has since grown into a thriving business producing a range of allergen-free granolas and snacks from a dedicated facility in Glenrothes. Today, Nakey Bakey’s products are free from all 14 major allergens, contain no added sugar and are naturally sweetened with fruit and vegan-friendly.
The business has now reached a major milestone after winning Scotmid’s Scottish Favourites competition, securing a listing in Scotmid Co-op stores across Scotland. Products will be distributed through wholesaler J.W. Filshill Limited, supporting the company’s continued growth ambitions.
To support this expansion, Nakey Bakey has secured a £100,000 invoice finance facility from Bank of Scotland. The funding will help the business invest in stock, increase production capacity and manage the longer payment terms often associated with major retail contracts.
As production ramps up to meet rising demand, Nakey Bakey plans to expand its workforce, with ambitions to recruit additional employees by the end of 2026.
Since rebranding in 2024, the business has built strong momentum, winning Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards – Free From Product of the Year, Scotland Start-Up Awards – Health & Wellbeing Start-Up of the Year and a Great Taste Award for its Mixed Berry Granola, while also achieving SALSA food safety accreditation and receiving recognition through two parliamentary motions.
Sustainability is also a key focus for the business, which has developed an ESG strategy focused on responsible sourcing, recyclable packaging and waste reduction. The company is also working towards B Corp certification by the end of 2027.
Over the next five years, Nakey Bakey aims to become the UK’s leading allergen-free food brand, expanding beyond granola into new product categories while exploring opportunities in international export markets.
