Scotland Food & Drink Partnership Launches Net Zero Handbook

12/07/2024

In a significant stride towards sustainability, the Scotland Food & Drink Partnership has launched a comprehensive Net Zero Handbook, unveiled at the COP26 summit. This pivotal resource aims to guide the Scottish food and drink industry towards achieving net zero emissions by 2045.

The Net Zero Commitment, announced in November 2021, underscores the partnership’s dedication to supporting the industry in its environmental goals. The Food and Drink Federation Scotland spearheads the Net Zero Commitment Programme, offering leadership and guidance to ensure the industry meets its ambitious targets.

Practical Guidance for SMEs

The newly launched handbook is tailored for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), constituting 97% of Scotland’s food businesses. It provides actionable steps for manufacturers to reduce their products’ embodied carbon emissions, making it invaluable for businesses at the nascent stages of their climate strategy. The handbook is available for free download, ensuring accessibility for all industry players.

The Net Zero Commitment is built on five long-term commitments, each supported by targeted interventions:

Leading the Way

This initiative is part of the broader industry strategy, “Sustaining Scotland. Supplying the World,” which aims to position Scotland as a global leader in sustainable food and drink production. The handbook and the accompanying programme are designed to ensure that everyone in the industry understands the path to net zero and is equipped with the knowledge and tools to achieve it.

The transition to net zero presents both challenges and opportunities. The Scotland Food & Drink Partnership recognizes Scotland’s potential to lead the world in sustainable practices, leveraging this commitment to drive innovation and growth within the industry.

Launching the Net Zero Handbook marks a significant milestone in Scotland’s journey towards a sustainable future, providing the food and drink industry with the guidance and support needed to meet its environmental goals.
