Stirling Potatoes has been supplying Aldi Scotland for more than a decade

Andrew Stirling, boss of Stirling Potatoes and long-time supplier to Aldi Scotland, is right in the middle of this year’s potato harvest, and he’s uncovered a common characteristic amongst his crops – they’re the tastiest yet.

Speaking from his fields in Angus, where harvest is in full swing, Andrew said:

“We’re right in the middle of the potato harvest here in Scotland, and as always, there’s the classic farmer’s moan – it’s too dry at harvest time. The challenge with dry conditions is that potatoes can bruise more easily. However, those same dry conditions actually make potatoes much tastier.”

According to Andrew, the warm, dry spell has boosted the dry matter in the crop which is the secret to the extra flavour.

He added: “The potatoes are slightly smaller this season, but that higher dry matter means they’re fuller in flavour and have a lovely texture when cooked. Whether it’s mash, potato salads, or even  good old-fashioned stovies, this year’s spuds are some of the tastiest yet.

“For example, Aldi’s Gastro Mashed Potatoes, which we supply, are particularly rich and creamy. Already on shelves now, shoppers will be amazed at how exceptionally fluffy they are.”

He continued: “Every year is different, but 2025 has shown how Scotland’s unpredictable weather can actually work in our favour.

“Although there are fewer of the big baking potatoes which have been seen in previous years, the overall tonnage is good. Medium-sized spuds are holding strong, and baby and salad varieties are slightly larger than usual.”

Stirling Potatoes has been supplying Aldi Scotland for more than a decade, with the retailer stocking a wide range of locally grown spuds at its famously low prices.

Shoppers can pick up Aldi’s Specially Selected Gastro Scottish Maris Piper Mashed Potatoes for just £1.59 per 400g, while a 2.5kg bag of Nature’s Pick white potatoes costs just £1.69. Aldi’s Nature’s Pick 2.5kg bag of Baking Potatoes is £2.09.

Graham Nicolson, Group Buying Director at Aldi Scotland, said:

“As with any crop grown in Scotland, the unpredictable weather conditions can have an impact on the size, shape and taste of the product. Working with expert suppliers like Stirling Potatoes ensures that we get the best possible produce every season, and our customers can enjoy the freshest, tastiest Scottish produce all year round.

“We’re looking forward to sampling this season’s flavoursome potatoes which are sure to be the cream of the crop.”
