El Santo Latin American Restaurant in Glasgow’s Merchant City is set to host its first-ever wine dinner later this month, bringing together Brazilian cuisine and Uruguayan winemaking for a one-night-only dining experience.

Taking place on Tuesday, 26 May, the event will feature a five-course menu created by Head Chef Juliana Kipper, paired with wines from acclaimed Uruguayan producer Juan Andres Marichal. Guests will have the opportunity to hear directly from Marichal, who will be in attendance to introduce each wine and share insight into its origins and flavour profile.

Marichal’s family vineyard, located in the Canelones region of Uruguay, produces a range of varietals including Tannat, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Working closely with Kipper, he has selected wines designed to complement the chef’s Latin American-inspired menu.

The evening begins with a Tuna Tostada starter, served with salsa negra, kimchi emulsion and caviar, paired with a Chandon Brut. This is followed by a scallop course accompanied by sweet potato purée and sugarcane molasses, matched with a natural orange wine.

A signature Picanha steak forms the centrepiece of the menu, served with cassava purée, shallots and okra, and paired with either a Marichal Tannat or Pinot Noir. Additional courses include an avocado sorbet with lemon and extra virgin olive oil, served ahead of the main course with a Marichal Albariño, and a dulce de leche fondant with coconut and walnut, paired with an Alcyone Tannat dessert wine.

Restaurant Operations Manager Denny Norris said the event marks an exciting milestone for the venue.

“We are very excited to debut our first ever wine dinner here at El Santo, showcasing the incredible skills of Juliana, our talented head chef, who brings all her knowledge and experience of Latin American cuisine, particularly the Brazilian dishes of her upbringing, to bear,” he said.

“It’s an honour to partner with wine expert Juan Andres in this experience. His wines are absolutely exceptional, with vines grown on gently sloping clay soils in a hot Mediterranean-style climate. Being just 40km from the sea, cooling breezes during the summer give the wines their distinctive character.”

Norris added that the restaurant hopes to make wine dinners a regular feature.

“Guests are in for a treat, with the opportunity to enjoy beautifully paired wines and dishes designed to complement each other’s flavour profiles. We expect strong demand and hope to make events like this a regular occurrence at El Santo.”

The dinner will begin at 6.30pm for a 7pm start and is priced at £70 per person. El Santo is located on Miller Street in Glasgow’s Merchant City.

Bookings can be made online, with further details available at www.elsanto.co.uk.
