A family-run bar and restaurant in Falkirk has expanded into the accommodation market after securing £25,000 in grant funding through the Falkirk Growth Fund, with support from Business Gateway.

The Courtyard, located on Baxter’s Wynd, first opened in 2017 under the ownership of Melissa Harrison. Since then, it has established itself as a local favourite, known for its freshly prepared, locally sourced food, well-stocked bar, and regular live music and karaoke nights. Now, the venue has added six newly renovated en-suite guest rooms to its offering.

The rooms have been created from previously unused space above the bar, with the grant funding playing a crucial role in bringing the project to completion. The expansion has already attracted national attention, with The Courtyard recently appearing on Channel 4’s Four in a Bed. Early demand for the rooms has been strong, helping to boost revenue, with further growth anticipated over the coming year.

Business Gateway adviser Ally Kale worked closely with Harrison to identify the Falkirk Growth Fund as a viable route to finance the expansion. Ongoing one-to-one support was provided throughout the process, including advice on scaling the premises and building a team capable of meeting increased demand.

Alongside financial guidance, Harrison also attended a Business Gateway digital clinic, which led to the development of a refined social media strategy. This resulted in an ongoing partnership with a consultant who now manages The Courtyard’s social media channels.

Further support saw the launch of a new website, developed with expert input on digital media and IT. The improved online presence has helped drive restaurant bookings and positioned the business to reach new audiences as it continues to grow.

The Courtyard has also engaged with Business Gateway’s Low Carbon Advisory Service to explore ways of reducing its environmental impact as the business expands.

Melissa Harrison, owner of The Courtyard, said: “The Courtyard has always been about more than food and drink. It’s part of this community, and everything we do is about making it somewhere people genuinely want to be.

“The grant funding made the rooms possible, and that has changed the shape of the business. Ally and the Business Gateway team have helped us see what was achievable and supported us every step of the way.”

Ally Kale, Business Gateway adviser, added: “Melissa has built something with real character in The Courtyard and it has been a pleasure to support the business in this latest stage of its growth.”

The Falkirk Growth Fund is now closed to applications. Businesses seeking support are encouraged to contact Business Gateway to explore alternative funding opportunities.
