A SCOTCH whisky specially selected by the late Doddie Weir sold out within 20 minutes of its release (Wednesday, April 19).

All bottles were snapped up via Royal Mile Whiskies, with just four bottles (number one, two, five and 55) kept aside for future auctions to raise funds for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

The Highland Single Malt (AD/06:17), distilled and bottled by Ardnamurchan Distillery, has been in development since June 2017. The whisky was chosen from a single ex-Oloroso Sherry cask for Scottish rugby legend Weir, who died shortly after his visit to Glenbeg on November 26, 2022 to select the final cask, after six years of living with MND.

Paul Thompson, Director of Fundraising, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, said: “The success of this release shows the strength of Doddie’s legacy. It’s what drives the Foundation on our continued mission to find a cure for MND.

“There is huge momentum in MND research at the moment, supported by the launch of our five-year research strategy this week.”

The five-year strategy, Catalysing a Cure, outlines how the Foundation – which is committed to funding research into MND – will invest millions of pounds in innovative research expected to have the greatest impact in pursuit of treatments and a cure for the devastating disease that affects around 5,000 people in the UK at any one time.

Thompson added: “We’re extremely grateful to everyone who made this launch possible; Ardnamurchan Distillery, Royal Mile Whiskies and most importantly, everyone who purchased a bottle. They will deservedly enjoy a dram in Doddie’s honour.”

The five-year-old single malt, priced at £100 per 750ml bottle, is described as ‘mouth coating’ with hazelnut praline, sea salt and bonfire embers, with a finish of ‘lingering milk chocolate’ priced at £100 per 750ml bottle.

One lucky buyer said: “Today I managed to purchase the Doddie Weir Ardnamurchan whisky, which means a lot as my sister has the condition and has received a lot of support from the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Thanks for making this bottle available and giving everyone a fair chance to purchase.”
