AN award-winning artisan bakery has opened its third premises in Edinburgh – located in the heart of the city’s NewTown, the Broughton Street site includes a retail shop and the first Bakery Andante café.

Bakery Andante is known for its real bread – authentic sourdoughs, focaccia, baguettes, croissants and more, all made using traditional techniques and without additives, enhancers or improvers. Established over a decade ago with a small shop in Morningside, the business expanded to its second site in Leith in 2017 and has continued to grow.

Open seven days a week, Bakery Andante Broughton Street is a bright, light, airy space where customers can pick up freshly-baked bread and cakes to go, or can choose to sit in and enjoy breakfast and brunch,  great coffee and cake or a light bite from the lunch menu.  Expect everything from house waffles and french toast through to Greek grilled cheese sandwiches and a flavour-packed Tuscan Panzanella salad.  The counter is full of tempting sweet treats to finish – everything from fresh fruit êclairs and cream-filled profiteroles to carrot cakes, delicate desserts and plenty for lovers of chocolate.

Building on a reputation for focusing on quality and flavour, the new site will continue to use only the finest ingredients in everything they create, working with small-scale, independent, and local producers wherever possible.  This means high-welfare charcuterie from Berwick-based Hammond Charcuterie, milk and cream from Edinburgh’s Bonaly Dairy, free-range eggs from the Gosford Estate, and salads will be dressed in Supernature premium cold-pressed rapeseed oil from Gorebridge.  Great coffee is promised, with the bakery’s baristas using beans from Santu Coffee – grown in Brazil and roasted in Leith’s Biscuit Factory, just a mile from the cafe’s door.

Bakery Andante will also offer plenty of choices for customers with allergies or other dietary requirements – with options  throughout the menu for vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free diets.  These are given as much thought and importance as every other dish, with fresh, flavour-packed salads, sandwiches, homemade soups and brunch dishes on offer in addition to bread, cakes and biscuits suitable for everyone.

Commenting on the launch, owner and head baker Jon Wood said “We are delighted to have opened here in Broughton Street.  It has been a long-held aim to open a café alongside our retail offerings, and also to find a location in such a fantastic area as this.  We love the range of businesses here already, and are pleased to be alongside others who share the same passion for their products and customer service.

“I’m also really happy to be able to offer a menu that’s inclusive to those with allergies or other dietary requirements – it’s something very close to my heart because my daughter has coeliac disease.  I know from her experience that choices can be extremely limited, so have worked hard to create products and dishes that can be enjoyed by as many people as possible.”
