Glasgow’s East End is poised for transformation with ambitious plans to revitalise the historic Meat Market sheds.

The proposals, led by the Meat Market Regeneration Community Interest Company, aim to convert the B-listed structures into a vibrant hub featuring sports facilities, an enterprise centre, and an upcycling hub.

Key Features of the Regeneration:

  • Sports Hub: A 1,747 sq metres facility with a badminton hall and other sports activities.
  • Padel Tennis Courts: Approximately 1,809 sq metres dedicated to Padel Tennis.
  • Bar Bistro and Events Space: A 310 sq metres area for social events.
  • Enterprise Centre: A 184 sq metres space for co-working and meetings.
  • Up-cycling Centre: A 407 sq metres facility promoting sustainable practices.

MAST Architects’ design preserves the heritage of the sheds while integrating modern uses. The project will serve as a base for a national sporting organisation and offer Padel Tennis facilities for the local community.

It also includes a modest enterprise space and resources to highlight the site’s cultural significance.

The development aligns with Glasgow City Council’s City Metro Strategy and complements ongoing housing projects in the area.

MAST Architects submitted a design statement to Glasgow City Council that stated: “The proposal is to conserve and renovate the category B listed Glasgow Meat Market shed structures into a multi-purpose but unified site in the heart of the East End of Glasgow.

“At the centre of this will be a modest enterprise and training space that will place learning and entrepreneurship at the heart of the project whilst the history, heritage and local cultural importance of the site will be captured by new heritage resources available on the site and online.

“Through a future phase and from a separate building, an active travel hub will be part of the wider vision and embedded in this unified vision for the site.”

This regeneration effort is expected to have a significant economic impact in the East End, enhancing both the local environment and community resources.
