Lidl GB has unveiled an extensive list of target locations across the United Kingdom where it is actively seeking sites for new supermarkets, signalling a significant phase of expansion for the discount retailer. The comprehensive list is detailed in the supermarket’s latest Site Requirements Brochure, published this Monday.

The strategic document identifies hundreds of prospective sites nationwide, with a particular focus on Scotland. Within Scotland, Lidl is targeting 52 locations, including 11 sites in Edinburgh, five in Glasgow and five in the North-East.

The North-East locations are Garthdee and Westhill in Aberdeen, plus Stonehaven, Banchory and Ellon.

Lidl has specified its property requirements, indicating a preference for freehold, leasehold, or long-leasehold sites. The retailer seeks prominent locations that benefit from strong footfall and easy accessibility. Ideal standalone store sites would typically be between 18,000 and 26,500 square feet, complemented by more than 100 dedicated car parking spaces, or cover 1.5 to 4 acres for mixed-use developments.

This latest announcement follows Lidl GB’s confirmation earlier this month of plans to open over 50 new stores within the next 12 months. This ambitious programme forms part of a substantial £600 million investment into the company’s British infrastructure. The expansion is anticipated to generate numerous quality employment opportunities across the country, as highlighted by the company’s leadership.

Richard Taylor, Chief Real Estate Officer at Lidl GB, underscored the company’s commitment to growth:

“At Lidl GB, we currently have one of the most ambitious store opening programmes of any supermarket and we are more committed than ever to bringing our high quality and low priced products to even more communities across the country.”

“All of our stores deliver more than just affordable products. Each one also brings quality jobs, opportunities for British suppliers to showcase the best of our home grown produce and support to local good causes in the communities each one serves. In uncertain times, shoppers and communities can count on us.”

The supermarket recently marked a significant milestone with the opening of its 1,000th store in East Grinstead, West Sussex, last November. This rapid expansion underscores Lidl’s sustained growth trajectory and its strategy to enhance its retail footprint across Great Britain.
