Scottish chippy chain Blue Lagoon eyes first English restaurant with £2 million Newcastle plan

Scottish fish and chip institution Blue Lagoon has unveiled plans to open its first restaurant in England, marking a major milestone in the family-run company’s 50-year history.

The Glasgow-based business has submitted proposals to Newcastle City Council to transform the Dicksons butchers site on Grainger Street into a £2 million restaurant and takeaway capable of seating 56 diners.

Founded in 1975 by Ersilio Varese, Blue Lagoon is now operated by the third generation of the family, with 16 branches across west and central Scotland. The brand has become a household name north of the border, attracting famous customers including Lewis Capaldi, Nigella Lawson and Justin Bieber.

In a letter to planners, director Simone Varese described the Newcastle project as “the next big step” for the business, following eight years of research into the ideal English location.

“It has been a long-term ambition of ours to open our first branch within one of England’s most prominent and vibrant cities,” he said. “Newcastle, and this location specifically, fits our requirements perfectly.”

If approved, the new restaurant would see listed building consent granted to adapt the existing property, including alterations to internal walls and the shopfront.

The move south marks a significant expansion for Blue Lagoon, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and continues to grow as one of Scotland’s most recognisable family food brands.
