Richard and Ben Megahy set to travel to Paris to represent the UK in world renowned competition

Richard  (49) and Ben Megahy (22) who work for Scotland’s leading butcher, Simon Howie in their Perth shop, have both been selected to represent the UK at the World Butchers Challenge in Paris on 30 and 31 March.

The father and son duo join the UK Lions Squad and Team GB Butchery following a gruelling selection process to find the most talented craft butchers across the UK.

Richard, who has been a butcher all his life and started working for Simon Howie in 1996, is participating as part of the Senior Squad. While Ben, who has worked for the company for 5 years was selected as one of only two Apprentices on the team.

Alongside six other UK competitors, who form the UK Lions Squad, Richard and Ben have been training for the past year travelling up and down to Plumpton College, just outside Brighton, ensuring they are at their peak performance for the event.

The teams will face off against international rivals, such as, Hellers Sharp Blacks from New Zealand, The Real Butcher Team from Brazil and the current world champions the Butcher Wolfpack from Germany.

Racing against the clock, participants will showcase their butchering expertise across a variety of meats, including beef, pork, lamb, and chicken.

Richard said: “We’re extremely excited about travelling to Paris at the end of the month. This competition really is the Oscars of the butchery world so to be representing our country is a dream come true.

“Competing alongside my son Ben makes it even more special and I’m delighted we are getting to share this experience together.”

Simon Howie said: “As two of our best butchers and most loyal team members I’m not surprised that Richard and Ben have been chosen to represent the UK.

“This is a great opportunity for them and we wish them all the very best in the competition. We’ll be cheering them on from back here in Dunning and can’t wait to hear all about it when they get back.”
