Sotto, Edinburgh’s well-regarded Italian wine destination, is preparing to welcome guests back for its first wine tasting of the season. Guided by Sotto’s owner and sommelier James Clark, alongside Murray McDougall from Raeburn Wines, the event will take place on Wednesday 22 October at 6pm.
The evening will showcase wines from the Valpolicella and Veneto regions, with James and Murray sharing the unique history, grape varieties, and craftsmanship behind the area’s celebrated bottles.
Guests will sample four distinct wines: a Bardolino Charetto Rosé, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Ripasso, and Amarone della Valpolicella. While all made from the same grape, each wine offers its own distinctive character thanks to different production techniques.

Sotto has built a reputation in Edinburgh for its carefully curated list of over 200 Italian wines, representing every region of the country. Following the tasting, attendees are warmly invited to reserve a table at the restaurant from 7pm to enjoy Sotto’s seasonal menu, which blends British produce with classical Italian cookery.
James Clark, Owner of Sotto, told Larder Magazine: “We run a Sunday afternoon wine tasting at Sotto, exploring either a region of Italy, a grape or a particular style of wine. Most importantly, it’s relaxed and convivial, and we try to make it accessible, fun and informative at the same time.

“My colleague Davide and I have been doing these events together for years, we really enjoy doing them and sharing our newest discoveries with everyone. The ticket price is usually around £20 for 5 wines, and you can order antipasti or cheese to sit and enjoy as we talk you through the wines.”
Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply curious to learn more about Italy’s most celebrated regions, Sotto’s tasting evening promises a relaxed and welcoming experience, blending knowledge and flavour in the heart of Edinburgh.
