Aberdeen Business News Exclusive
A dessert trend born in the luxury cafés of the United Arab Emirates is now sweeping through Aberdeen, captivating the taste buds of locals and sparking a wave of creative innovation among dessert businesses across the city. Known as Dubai chocolate, this indulgent sweet treat has become a viral sensation over the past year or so, bringing the rich flavours, textures, and cultural heritage of the Middle East.
What Is Dubai Chocolate?
Dubai chocolate is more than just chocolate, it’s a multi-sensory dessert experience. Typically made with smooth, high-quality chocolate, pistachio paste/cream/butter, and shredded kunafa (a crispy Middle Eastern pastry), this luxurious dessert layers rich tasty flavours with crunch and creaminess in every bite. It originated in Dubai, where dessert cafés have long been known for their extravagant, Instagram-worthy creations.
Though it began as a trend in the Gulf region, Dubai chocolate exploded in popularity across social media in 2023 and 2024, with influencers and foodies showcasing molten chocolate-covered pastries, filled bars, and glossy pistachio-drizzled bites. The eye-catching visuals and the fusion of Middle Eastern flavours helped fuel its rise, eventually inspiring independent bakers and dessert makers in the UK to bring their versions to life.
In Aberdeen, three standout businesses have emerged as frontrunners in this sweet trend:
Krepes ‘N’ Kones
The Chocolate Kartel
Golden Delights
Aberdeen Business News reached out to the owners of these three businesses to find out more about this viral chocolate craze, how it started, how it’s made, and what it means to local dessert lovers.
Krepes ‘N’ Kones

Located on George Street, Krepes N Kones, which has been open for years, has earned a reputation for bold, fun dessert creations, and their Dubai chocolate range is no exception. Madiha, one of the owners, explained the inspiration behind their approach:
“We wanted to create something that reflects both the opulence and cultural essence of Dubai, while offering a unique twist for our customers,” she said. “The Pistachio Kunafa Burrito blends decadent chocolate with unexpected textures and flavours from crunchy kunafa, it feels both indulgent and adventurous.”
Their Dubai chocolate additions, including the now-famous burrito and a chocolate strawberry cup, have been met with enormous enthusiasm. “It’s been insanely popular,” Madiha added. “Customers are curious and excited, it’s opened up a new experience for many.”
When asked about Krepes ‘N’ Kones’ process of refining the Dubai chocolate recipe, Madiha responded:
“The testing and refining process was both creative and meticulous. We began by sourcing premium chocolate blends that could pair well with traditional Middle Eastern ingredients. From there, we experimented with different combinations, adjusting sweetness levels and testing textures. “
“We went through several rounds of tastings, tweaking each element until the balance was just right. It wasn’t just about flavour, but also about how the chocolate performed in different formats, from fillings to sauces to bars. It took time, but in the end, we developed a recipe that’s both distinctive and unique.”
While Dubai chocolate is now a core part of their offering, Madiha sees it evolving: “Our goal is to let it evolve through new creations, it gives us the flexibility to stay creative while still offering something that feels uniquely us.”
“So while Dubai chocolate isn’t going anywhere, you can expect to see it take on fresh, exciting forms over time.”
The Chocolate Kartel

Another name generating buzz is The Chocolate Kartel, a growing Aberdeen-based brand that began its Dubai chocolate journey last summer.
“I got swept up in the craze and started recreating the flavours just for fun,” the founder shared. “Friends and family loved it. One relative who had actually been to Dubai told me my chocolate bar tasted exactly like the ones there, and that really stuck with me. What made me even more determined to start was realising that nothing like this existed in Aberdeen”
Unlike more commercial producers such as the supermarket giants, The Chocolate Kartel puts a strong focus on traditional techniques, including slow-roasting shredded phyllo dough to enhance its sweetness and crunch.
A unique feature of their offering is the white Dubai chocolate bar, which has become a customer favourite. “I didn’t want anyone to feel left out of the craze,” they explained. “So I developed a white chocolate version that’s just as rich and exciting. My white chocolate is crafted with the same rich flavours and traditional techniques that I use for my other chocolates, so it’s both a familiar treat and an exciting new twist. A lot of people have given great feedback on the white chocolate, and it’s definitely something I’m working on expanding.”
The Chocolate Kartel has big plans for growth: “While I’ve been focusing on collection only to maintain that personal touch (it gives me the chance to speak to my customers on a 1-1 basis) and ensure the best quality, I’m working hard on setting up a delivery system. But honestly, I have plans to expand even further than just deliveries if you know what I mean eek! There’s a lot I’m working on behind the scenes.”
Golden Delights

Rounding out the trio is Golden Delights, a small business that launched in March 2025 and quickly gained a loyal following through Aberdeen’s bustling market scene.
Owner Haytham credits their market appearances for refining the Dubai chocolate experience. “Direct interaction has been invaluable. We receive immediate feedback, understanding what customers like and don’t like. Their reactions have helped shape everything – even how we present the stall.”
“We’ve refined our approach based on customer insights, enhancing both our product and stall experience.”
Though they also offer online delivery, growth has been more localised for now. “Sales have been slower online, but we have a marketing plan in place to boost them. We’re optimistic as we expand our reach,” Haytham shared.
When asked about how customers react to trying Dubai Chocolate for the first time “Many of our customers have heard of Dubai chocolate but haven’t tried it. It’s the mix of smooth chocolate, crunchy kunafa, and pistachio. That blend creates a unique experience people haven’t had before.”
Golden Delights on their methods: “Our recipe is largely traditional, using the same ingredients but with a focus on high-quality and handcrafted techniques. While texture might vary slightly, our commitment to premium ingredients and unique flavour combinations sets Golden Delights apart.”
“We aim to offer a special and memorable taste of Dubai chocolate, distinguishing us from other offerings in Aberdeen.”
As Dubai chocolate continues to gain momentum in Aberdeen, these three businesses are not just riding the wave – they’re shaping its local legacy. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Middle Eastern desserts or just discovering Dubai chocolate for the first time, there’s never been a better time to indulge.
