A special half bottle of whisky, perfect for Scotland fans packing their bags for America this summer, has been created to mark the nation’s return to the World Cup

With less than eight weeks to go until Scotland’s first World Cup match in 28 years, a limited edition whisky, perfect for tucking in your suitcase if travelling to the US or enjoying while watching the match, has been released to mark the occasion.

Bottled to celebrate Scotland’s dramatic qualification, A Belter for America comes in a half-size 35cl bottle with a label design that captures the now famous overhead kick against Denmark at Hampden Park, the goal that started Scotland on their way back to the World Cup.

Named in an affectionate nod to Letter to America by Scotland’s other most famous export, The Proclaimers, this whisky is the perfect travel companion for wherever fans are watching the match this summer.

Released by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (the SMWS), the world’s leading whisky club, the bottle is one of two limited edition expressions marking Scotland’s return to the world stage after an absence stretching back to France in 1998.

A Belter for America has been undergone additional maturation in a sherry cask, giving it notes of dark-roasted coffee beans, chocolate, caramel and candied fruits. Priced at £39, it is available now. The bottle being available to all whisky fans is a rare departure for the members-only club.

The SMWS focuses on exploring whisky by flavour, rather than brand, and keeps its distillery sources a closely guarded secret. Each bottle is identified by a unique code rather than a distillery name, and coincidentally A Belter for America comes from Distillery 28, which is surely a lucky number for Scotland fans!

Julie Roberts Innovation Manager at SMWS said: “Scotland’s qualification has been a long time coming, but as any whisky lover knows, good things come to those who wait.”

A Belter for America is for everyone who wants to raise a glass to the team, whether they are watching from a pub in Edinburgh or making the trip across the pond. We can’t think of a better way to get into the spirit of the tournament!”
