The Scholar Hotel Introduces Grab-and-Go Coffee Outlet in Edinburgh’s Southside

The Hatch opens, expanding food and beverage offerings within the University of Edinburgh Hospitality Collection portfolio.

The Scholar Hotel, located within Edinburgh’s Pollock Estate, has launched The Hatch, a new grab-and-go coffee and treats window. Positioned for accessibility to local walking routes, the outlet offers fresh coffee, iced drinks, and baked pastries, alongside dog treats.

The new addition expands The Scholar Hotel’s food and beverage options, following the recent refurbishment and opening of Abacus, the hotel’s restaurant and bar which provides breakfast, all-day dining, and drinks. The Scholar Hotel, a four-star property with 72 bedrooms, operates as part of the University of Edinburgh Hospitality Collection, with revenue generated supporting the university’s teaching and research initiatives. The hotel was recognised with the “Best 4 Star Hotel, East Scotland” and “Best Team” accolades at the 2025 Scottish Hotel Awards.

Edinburgh’s hotel market has consistently ranked as a prominent investment destination within the UK regions, maintaining its top position in the Colliers Hotel Market Index since 2018. The city experiences consistent demand throughout the year, supported by cultural events and its appeal to both domestic and international visitors. This has contributed to significant growth in occupancy and average daily rates in recent years, with Edinburgh recording an 84.6% occupancy rate in the 12 months to April 2026, one of the highest among major European gateway markets. The expansion into convenient food and beverage services aligns with evolving consumer preferences in urban hospitality environments.

Gavin MacLennan, Group General Manager at University of Edinburgh Hospitality Collection, commented on the opening: “Edinburgh is such a fantastic city to explore on foot, particularly as we head into Autumn and the leaves start to turn. We’re lucky to be right on the doorstep of some of its best walking routes so we wanted to create somewhere people could stop for a great coffee, take a moment to relax and make the most of everything this part of Edinburgh has to offer.”

The Hatch is located on the main route at the edge of the Pollock Estate, offering access for individuals visiting Holyrood Park, Arthur’s Seat, or the Innocent Railway Path. Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano, is a significant natural landmark within Holyrood Park, providing panoramic views of the city from its summit. Another establishment within the University of Edinburgh Hospitality Collection, The Gallery Bar at The Scott Hotel, also situated on the historic Pollock Estate, provides an alternative for refreshments. The Scott Hotel, an 18th-century baronial mansion, was gifted to the University of Edinburgh in the 1940s and now operates as a four-star deluxe hotel.
