Continuing its popular Talks at the Bar series, Aberdeen’s SOBR has announced its next speaker, with Aberdonian influencer Mikey Banks set to take to the stage on Thursday 30 July.
Hosted at the alcohol-free bar on Thistle Street, the evening promises an honest and deeply personal discussion, as Banks opens up about his past struggles with drug addiction, a suicide attempt, and the journey that has led him to a renewed sense of purpose.
Now known for his candid social media presence, Banks has built a significant following by sharing his recovery story and offering encouragement to others facing similar challenges. His talk at SOBR will explore the realities of recovery, including the practical steps he takes daily to maintain sobriety, as well as the hope and opportunity that can emerge after difficult experiences.
Jane Duncan, Events and Marketing Coordinator at SOBR, said: “We are really pleased to have secured a date for Mikey to talk. He has a strong social media following due to this powerful message.
“Mikey’s story isn’t just one about what went wrong, it’s about what comes next. Whether you’re in recovery, supporting someone who is or simply interested in hearing an inspiring story of resilience and growth, everyone is welcome to come along to Mikey’s talk.”

Banks joins a growing line-up of speakers featured in the series, including Kim Lam, who shared her experience of waiting for an organ transplant, and Aberdeen-based mum Jade Auld, who opened the programme in January with her story of sobriety.
The Talks at the Bar series was introduced by SOBR owner Kate Kenyon as part of a wider effort to encourage open conversations around addiction and recovery, while reinforcing the venue’s role as a safe and inclusive space within the city.
