One of the most northerly distilleries on mainland Scotland is raising a toast to the life-saving crews of Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) as it announces a five-year partnership in support of the charity.

Wolfburn Distillery at Thurso, Caithness, is pledging £15 from every sale of special SCAA-labelled 12-year-old malt as a running fundraiser for the airborne lifesavers.

With bases at Perth and Aberdeen, SCAA has recently launched the country’s most advanced helicopter air ambulance of its kind – a new H145 D3. And Wolfburn is marking that launch with a numbered run of 145 bottles of their flagship malt bearing their specially commissioned SCAA label.

The first year’s offering of the sherry/bourbon cask matured whisky is already proving a best seller with vital funding heading SCAA’s way as a result. And the northern distillers are vowing to keep bottling the favoured tipple for SCAA as sales demand.

Mark Westmorland, Wolfburn’s Global brand ambassador, praised the country-wide work of the air ambulance charity which, like Wolfburn, celebrates its 13th birthday this year.

“Everyone at Wolfburn is extremely proud to support SCAA in its mission to ensure that ‘no one in Scotland should die because help can’t get there in time’,” he said.

“This first numbered-label bottling is the initial milestone in our five-year partnership which I hope will support their vital work and result in many more lives saved.

“SCAA is a charity which relies on the support of the public to ensure crews can reach those most seriously ill or injured anywhere in Scotland and Wolfburn is happy to help fuel their life-saving flights.”

Michael Hanratty, SCAA’s community fundraising officer for the Highlands and Islands, said the charity owed a huge debt to corporate partners such as Wolfburn.

“The team at Wolfburn has been so enthusiastic about supporting SCAA and we can’t thank them enough,” he said. “They want to use their product and platforms to help those most in need throughout Scotland and their dedicated labelling and donations is a huge boost for both our profile and fundraising. Their generosity will undoubtedly save lives.”

Wolfburn SCAA branded and numbered malt can be purchased exclusively through the distillery’s website.  Once the 145 numbered bottles are sold, SCAA labelled bottles will then be sold through their retailers throughout the country.

Matured in a balanced mix of second-fill Oloroso sherry butts and ex-bourbon casks, distillers describe their 12-year-old as “a delectably smooth dram with rich notes of honey, burnt sugar and a subtle trace of dried fruits and caramel until the end”.

Every December, a run of 145 will be numbered ahead of the general SCAA labelling. SCAA Wolfburn malt can be ordered online at: https://wolfburn.com/products/scaa-single-malt-scotch-whisky-46-vol-70cl
