A brand-new space for creativity, collaboration, and community has opened its doors in Dundee this week, marked by a showcase performance from local alternative artist Theo Bleak.

CANVAS, the city’s latest multi-purpose venue, promises to be a place of discovery where ideas are brought to life.

Celebrating Dundee’s industrial heritage, CANVAS is housed in the historic Blackness Ironworks at the foot of Blackness Road in the West End.

The building has been thoughtfully repurposed into a welcoming and attractive space, perfect for cultural events, craft markets, and creative workspaces.

As the home of 71 Brewing, the venue also serves as the brewery’s official taproom, providing a lively environment for music lovers, art enthusiasts, and craft beer aficionados alike.

Designed as a hub for artists, makers, and thinkers, CANVAS will host a wide range of activities, including exhibitions, workshops, live music and DJ sets, and private gatherings.

The flexible venue aims to offer a warm and inviting atmosphere for everyone, encouraging creativity and connection.

Sustainability is central to CANVAS’s ethos. The venue is heated and cooled using an innovative system that recycles surplus energy from 71 Brewing, ensuring a lower environmental impact while maintaining comfort throughout the year.

The creative team are also working in partnership with Draff Studio to transform spent malt from the brewing process into bespoke furniture for the venue, including a state-of-the-art bar – demonstrating that sustainability and craftsmanship are at the heart of CANVAS.

“CANVAS is about bringing people together to share ideas, celebrate creativity, and enjoy exceptional beer in a truly inspiring setting,” said Neil Mowat, Managing Director at CANVAS. “We’re excited to welcome the Dundee community and beyond to be part of this journey.”

CANVAS is open weekly from Thursday to Sunday evenings, with a full programme of events available on Instagram @canvasdundee. For enquiries and bookings, please email events@canvasdundee.com.
