One of Edinburgh’s most beloved cultural touchstones, The Elephant House Café on George IV Bridge, is officially reopening its doors today, four years after a devastating fire forced its closure. The long‑awaited return marks a major moment for the city, for global fans of its literary connections, and for the countless visitors who have made the café a must‑see stop on their travels.

Often described as “the birthplace of Harry Potter” thanks to its deep ties to the early writing days of the world‑famous Harry Potter series, The Elephant House has drawn millions of fans from around the world. Visitors have long flocked to its cosy rooms to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy a coffee with a view of Edinburgh Castle and leave their own mark, most famously through the spontaneous tradition of graffiti tributes in the toilets, which became an iconic part of the café’s story.

Today’s reopening restores a cherished piece of Edinburgh’s cultural landscape. The rebuilt café blends the familiar warmth and charm that made it world‑renowned with thoughtful modern updates designed to welcome a new generation of writers, readers and travellers.

Proprietor David Taylor said:

“Seeing the doors open again is nothing short of a dream come true. After everything the café has been through, to stand here at Christmas with the lights on, the coffee brewing, and people coming back through the door, it’s very emotional. This place has always meant so much to so many, and I’m overjoyed that its story continues.”

The reopening is expected to draw visitors from across the globe in the coming weeks, many of whom have been eagerly awaiting the return of the café that has become synonymous with creativity, imagination and Edinburgh’s literary spirit.

The Elephant House Café is now open daily from 10AM until 6PM on George IV Bridge.
