Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players in history, continues to showcase his exceptional form.
Last autumn, he clinched the Ballon d’Or, a prestigious accolade bestowed upon the world’s finest player, marking his eighth win, a record-breaking achievement. Following his high-profile transfer from the French club Paris Saint-Germain to Major League Soccer (MLS), his team, Inter Miami, currently leads the Eastern Conference standings. Notably, Messi has made history in the MLS by becoming the first player to achieve five goals and five assists in the first five games of the season.
In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Messi has now become an emblematic figure for potato chips. The Argentine legend has joined forces with Lay’s crisps for an innovative campaign that puts a unique twist on one of soccer’s most iconic chants, offering fans the chance to win exclusive Lay’s merchandise.
If you’ve ever attended a soccer match or watched one on TV, you’re likely familiar with the crowd singing “Olé, Olé, Olé” to celebrate exceptional plays or players. This year, Lay’s and Messi aim to transform this chant into “Oh Lay’s.”

In a captivating commercial, Messi is depicted in the locker room, indulging in a bag of Lay’s chips before a match (a scene we can all imagine as his pre-game ritual), where he vocalises “Oh Lay’s,” prompting his teammates to join in chanting those words. This chant resonates throughout the stadium and reaches viewers at home. To bring this concept to life, Lay’s will launch a sweepstakes immediately after Messi executes his first chip-shot goal of the season.
Within 48 hours of Messi’s inaugural chip, Lay’s will commence distributing limited-edition soccer-ball-shaped potato chip bags. Additionally, one fortunate chip enthusiast will have the opportunity to win a Leo Messi-signed Lay’s logo soccer jersey.
To enter the contest – beginning with Messi’s chip-shot goal – participants must visit the @Lays account on Instagram, TikTok, or X (formerly known as Twitter), and comment using the hashtags #OHLAYS and #sweepstakes on the post announcing Messi’s goal and the launch of the contest.
Tina Mahal, senior vice president of marketing at PepsiCo Foods North America, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “When it comes to the perfect blend of skill and flavour, few can match the iconic taste of Lay’s chips or the mastery of Messi on the field, so we knew we had to bring the chip icons together to recognise their greatness.” She further added, “With the introduction of ‘Oh-Lay’s,’ we’re thrilled to continue our commitment to spark moments of joy for soccer fans everywhere, reminding them that there’s no better snack for watching soccer than Lay’s potato chips.”
