May is a big month for whisky with World Whisky Day (16 May) and whisky festival season in Scotland– but London’s whisky fans don’t need to travel to Scotland for a taste of the action, thanks to a special event.
While whisky lovers flock to events in Speyside, Campbeltown and Islay, Londoners can sample the five regions of Scotland on the 12 May at a whisky tasting event from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.
Taking place at 19 Greville Street, the event will see whiskies from five regions – Campbeltown, Speyside, Islay, Lowlands and Highlands – tasted and compared, asking the question, “what comes first, flavour or region?” Attendees will decide for themselves which is more important when it comes to picking the perfect whisky.
The bar is normally for members of the Society only, but this event will be open to non-members, offering the rare opportunity to see behind the scenes at the international whisky club. Tickets are £50 for both members and non-members.
The event will coincide with the release of 17 bottles from the five whisky regions of Scotland, as well as “The Five Regions” (£74), an 11-year-old blend of single malt whiskies from Campbeltown, Speyside, Islay, Lowlands and Highlands.
Simone Malavolta, Manager of the Society’s London venue, 19 Greville Street, said: “May is an important month for whisky, and we wanted to honour the festivals by showcasing the incredible breadth of whisky produced by the five whisky regions of Scotland.
“We want to explore the interaction between flavour and region, which can often be surprising, but we’re not here to say whether region or flavour should come first when picking a whisky – that is up to members to decide!”
Founded in Edinburgh in 1983, with its Bath Street venue in Glasgow open since 2020, the SMWS has always championed flavour over tradition, not revealing distillery names on bottles and instead creating evocative names like “Red wine and brine in the old coal mine” and “Lavender honey and chimney lobsters” to guide whisky exploration through taste and aroma.
