Social by Matto has arrived and it’s Edinburgh’s hottest hangout for cocktails and sharing plates. This new venture is the fourth site from the team behind family-run MATTO, one of Edinburgh’s most popular pizza joints located in Newington, Meadowbank and Morningside.
Fresh cicchetti tempt from the window display, frozen Aperol margaritas are flowing and the chefs are hard at work at the gold mirrored pizza oven. The site has 70 covers, with a choice of seating at the bijoux bar with pink neon and red marble accents, the main restaurant for larger groups to gather together or the 44 cover terrace for enjoying a sundowner.
The full-bodied menu features Venetian cicchetti for grazing or takeaway, small plates, sharing plates, pizza and pizette, loaded crisps and indulgent desserts using the highest quality Italian and Scottish ingredients. Social by Matto is also first in the city to give diners a golden pair of scissors to easily cut pizza orders.
There’s plenty of instagram worthy menu items including,
- Panuozzo sexy sandwich which is like a calzone and sandwich love child, fluffy, crispy and stuffed to the brim with melty cheese, cured meats and saucy veggies,
- Sharing butter platter with garlic herb butter, lemon and pink pepper butter and chilli honey butter with crostini, £11.50
- Loaded crisps with salted crisps, prosciutto, pickled peppers, black pepper and toasted pecorino, £12.50
- Braveheart pizza or pizzette, secret tomato sauce base, mozzorella, haggis, red onion, ham hock, dill and yoghurt sauce, parsley £18/£9.50
The drinks list is extensive, with Italian themed cocktails, Social by Matto specials and classic pours. From a tiramisu martini, to Social lager on draught and even an Irn Bru whisky sour there really is something for everyone to enjoy. The restaurant has been inspired by the Venetian Bacari, wine bars where locals come together with friends and family to enjoy cichetti finger foods and ombre, small glasses of wine. The wine list is Italian only, with the finest bottles from each region represented and the expert staff are on hand to explain which pair perfectly with the menu.
