A Scottish coffee roaster, Matthew Algie, is celebrating 160 years in business with a multi-million-pound factory upgrade near Glasgow’s River Clyde.
The renovation includes a pallet-packing robot and state-of-the-art technology, aimed at improving eco-friendliness.
Founded in 1864 as a tea blending business, Matthew Algie survived two World Wars and expanded into coffee roasting.
Today, it employs over 400 people and supplies coffee and machines to more than 7,500 UK businesses.

The company boasts several firsts, including the UK’s first Fairtrade espresso and the world’s first triple certified coffee.
It works with Fairtrade farmers globally and served coffee to world leaders at COP26. The recent factory transformation introduces advanced green bean handling, automation, and packaging systems.
This upgrade aims to reduce manual handling, increase capacity, and cut carbon emissions, supporting Matthew Algie’s goal of achieving Net Zero by 2040.
From its humble beginnings on the Clyde, Matthew Algie has grown into a major UK and Irish coffee supplier, now owned by German coffee giant Tchibo.
Its history reflects both Glasgow’s industrial past and its commitment to a sustainable future in the coffee industry.

The huge investment is one of a number of successes the team at Matthew Algie are celebrating. In May they scooped an Engineering Excellence Award at the Scottish Engineering Awards.
Considered to be one of Scotland’s best employers, it was voted Most Outstanding Business at the 2023 Glasgow Business Awards.
