A new name in fast food has touched down in the Granite City and it’s promising a fresh twist on fried chicken. Chicking, the Dubai-based halal chicken franchise, has quietly launched at 73 Holburn Street ahead of its grand opening on 2nd September.
Founded in 2000 and now operating in over 36 countries, Chicking is known for its bold flavours, fusion-style menu and fully halal offering. Aberdeen marks the brand’s second location in Scotland, and the team behind it believes the city is the perfect fit.

The venture is being led by business partners Bharath Gourayapalli and Joyce Vinnakota, with support from franchisee Ajay Marrikanti, who has deep roots in the area. Marrikanti opened his first business on Holburn Street 14 years ago and said the opportunity to return to where it all began made the decision feel personal.
“Aberdeen’s vibrant and diverse community, combined with its dynamic food scene, made it an ideal choice for Chicking’s next UK location,” said Gourayapalli. “We’re offering something different – high-quality, affordable halal food made fresh to order, and infused with Middle Eastern-inspired flavours.”
The Holburn Street venue, which occupies a former tattoo parlour, underwent a full transformation with the help of local contractors. The result is a contemporary, casual space offering both sit-in and takeaway, with seating for 20.

Chicking’s soft launch began on 5th August with a reduced menu, giving curious customers a first taste of its signature dishes. These include spicy hot wings, crispy tenders, tacos, rice boxes and the Royal Crunchy chicken burger – the star of a £1 opening promotion designed to drive early footfall and build loyalty.
Local response, according to the team, has already exceeded expectations.
“There’s been real buzz from the community, especially among students and nearby workers,” said Gourayapalli. “We’re excited to build strong local ties and become a go-to spot for fresh, affordable food.”
Chicking prides itself on a different approach from mainstream fast-food rivals. Chicken is sourced locally and marinated for hours before being cooked to order, with prices starting from just £4.99. A signature tandoori sauce and plans to introduce Peri-Peri chicken in the coming weeks show the brand’s commitment to both variety and flavour.
“We’re not just another fried chicken place,” added Gourayapalli. “Our menu is inspired by Dubai’s culinary diversity, with everything from chicken quesadillas to loaded fries. And we’re still exploring options to introduce an Aberdeen Angus burger if we can secure a suitable local supplier.”

As for challenges, the team acknowledged that launching a global franchise in a new market comes with hurdles – from refurbishment logistics to differentiating from established names. But with an experienced team and strong franchise support, they are confident Chicking will thrive in the North East.
Chicking is open now for walk-ins with a reduced menu and will officially launch on Monday 2nd September with its full offering. Opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 11am to 10pm.
