British holidaymakers will soon be able to grab a sausage roll before boarding their flight, as Greggs prepares to open its first-ever international shop at Tenerife South Airport later this month. The move marks the high street bakery’s return to trading overseas, following a previous venture in Belgium which ended in 2008.

The new outlet will be located in the airport’s international departures area and will be Greggs’ only shop outside the UK. Travellers can expect a familiar line-up of bakes, rolls, sweet treats and freshly made sandwiches, echoing the offer found in its more than 2,500 branches across Britain.

In a nod to its new island setting, Greggs is also introducing a Spanish omelette roll on the breakfast menu, alongside freshly squeezed orange juice prepared and bottled on site each day. The bakery says the additions are designed to give customers “a refreshing taste of island life” while still delivering the comfort of its classic products.

The Tenerife South shop will include seating for up to 92 customers, providing space for holidaymakers to sit in with their coffee, breakfast or pre-flight snack. Greggs has chosen the Canary Islands hub, which handles millions of passengers a year and is especially popular with UK tourists, as what it describes as an ideal location to “test spreading our wings in an overseas setting”.

The opening is being delivered in partnership with Lagardere Travel Retail, a global operator that runs more than 5,000 stores in airports, railway stations and other travel locations worldwide. Greggs said the collaboration would help it tap into strong demand for food-on-the-go in busy transport hubs, building on its existing presence at UK airports such as Gatwick.

Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie said: “Tenerife South Airport is a hub for millions of UK and international passengers each year, making it the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting.

“It’s an exciting milestone for Greggs as we bring a slice of home to the Canaries, and we’re confident our great-value offering will resonate just as well under the Spanish sun as it does on the UK high street.”

The Tenerife launch comes as Greggs continues to expand its estate at home, with the chain targeting a net addition of around 120 shops across the UK this year. With its first international site now confirmed, the bakery will be closely watching how customers respond to a “slice of home” served up in the sun.
