Finsbury Food Group has expanded its licensed celebration cake portfolio with the launch of a cake inspired by the Thorntons Continental Viennese Truffle.

The Thorntons Viennese Continental Cake is the first product of its kind to be created as part of the Continental range. It is available exclusively in 160 Asda stores across the UK from 12 September.

Designed to recreate the flavours of the Viennese Truffle chocolate, the cake combines layers of chocolate and vanilla sponge with chocolate frosting.

It is decorated with milk chocolate curls and piping before being finished with Viennese Truffles from the Thorntons Continental collection.

Each cake serves 16 people and has a recommended retail price of £17. The launch will be supported by in-store and online promotional activity, alongside planned product sampling.

It follows a period of growth for Thorntons Continental within the boxed chocolate market. Figures from Nielsen show the range recorded a 10% increase in value and 7% growth in volume during the year to 8 August 2026.

David Cotter, brand manager at Finsbury Food Group, said: “This is the first cake Finsbury has created as part of the Thorntons Continental range, so it’s an exciting step for us and one we see a lot of potential in.

“With a clear appetite for new Thorntons products beyond the chocolate box, we jumped at the opportunity to create something special to not only impress existing lovers of the brand but also attract new consumers.”

Cotter said shoppers were increasingly looking for premium products when selecting celebration cakes, creating an opportunity to extend Thorntons into a new category.

Claire Cox, marketing manager at Thorntons, said the product was the latest development in the brand’s long-standing partnership with Finsbury.

She said: “With the Thorntons range continuing to perform well, we saw a real opportunity to build on that momentum and give consumers a new way to enjoy one of our most recognisable chocolates.

“Bringing the Viennese Truffle to life as a premium celebration cake felt like the perfect way to do that.”
