Supermarket chain plans new Uddingston outlet and multiple extensions
Aldi has announced an investment of approximately £19.5 million in Scotland during 2027, forming part of its broader £900 million UK investment programme. The supermarket revealed that this funding will facilitate the opening of a new store in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire. Additionally, existing Aldi stores in Alloa, Leven, St Andrews, Gilmerton Road Edinburgh, and Motherwell are slated for extensions to enhance shopping space and improve store layouts for customers.

Across the wider UK, Aldi intends to open 40 new stores throughout 2027, alongside ongoing investment directed towards its distribution network. The company currently operates 1,095 stores and has a long-term goal to expand its presence to 1,500 locations across the country. This expansion strategy focuses on serving communities that presently face challenges in accessing affordable groceries due to limited local choice or competition.
Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, commented on the plans, stating: “We’re continuing to invest significantly across the UK as we progress towards our long-term ambition of 1,500 Aldi stores. These new locations are part of our £900 million investment programme for 2027 and will help us bring Aldi’s award-winning quality and unbeatable value to even more communities. We’re excited to take the next step in our expansion plans and look forward to welcoming customers through the doors of these new stores in the years ahead.”
This investment builds upon Aldi’s existing expansion initiatives, which include plans to open 30 stores during the final months of 2026. The supermarket anticipates that its continued growth will generate thousands of jobs and create further opportunities for British suppliers.
