As we start a new year many people are focused on health resolutions and making improvements to their diet, local business Sandwich Larder can help with their project to reduce red front of pack labels.
Aberdeen-based food company Sandwich Larder has been awarded funding from the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Scotland’s new Healthier Food Service Fund, launched in partnership with Food Standards Scotland (FSS).
The initiative supports small and medium sized food and drink businesses supplying the foodservice sector across Scotland in creating healthier products by reducing fat, sugar, calories or salt, or increasing fibre, wholegrain, or fruit and vegetables in their recipes.
The sandwich supplier will utilise this investment to improve the nutritional content of their popular sandwich and snack ranges by making at least 75% of their products aligned with green and amber front of pack labelling.
The funding, which provides up to £5,000 per successful applicant, requires businesses to match at least 50% of the total project costs, with FSS providing the remainder.
David MacKintosh, Sandwich Larder, said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded funding from the Healthier Food Service Fund to help us provide customers with more nutritious sandwich options. The funding will help us to achieve at least 75% of our products being green and amber front of pack labelled. As a family company, we are committed to offering a wider range of healthier products and this funding will go a long way in supporting our efforts to achieve this.
Sandwich Larderwas established 21 years ago, by David Mackintosh, and is now a second-generation family business. We carry that family feel across everything we do from our staff to our customers, Sandwich Larder is a stable and reliable source of catering within the North East of Scotland , which we are expanding across other areas and locations.
Our dedicated team ensure we can supply customers 7 days a week to maintain our high-quality standards and Davids’s seal of approval on every product.
A large proportion of our business is direct to contract caters, NHS and direct supply. This is predominately prepacked items but also a large numbers of sandwich platters and lunches that we cater for on a daily basis. Quality and freshness are at the forefront of everything we do, and we try to support as local much as possible.”
Joanne Burns, FDF Scotland’s Reformulation for Health Manager, said: “We are delighted to support businesses that supply the Scotland’s essential foodservice sector in overcoming the challenges of reformulation and making healthier choices easier for consumers. We are pleased that Sandwich Larder are working to reduce red front of pack labelling on their products across such important sectors as NHS and contract catering. The Reformulation for Health Programme has already supported innovative projects that have removed billions of calories and tonnes of salt from Scottish food products in line with public health goals, and we look forward to seeing Sandwich Larder achieve similar success.”
