Described by The Times as a “bold, modernist dram,” Ardbeg whisky has always challenged tradition – and now, its new home does the same. Owned by luxury conglomerate LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Ardbeg House is a hotel unlike any other on Islay: characterful, unconventional, and full of spirit. To bring its richly layered interiors to life, Ardbeg trusted Thomas Johnstone Ltd as its specialist fit-out contractor, drawing on the team’s specialist expertise to deliver a project as distinctive as the whisky itself.

Working closely with the design team at Russell Sage Studio and the wider project team, TJL was appointed to deliver the transformation of this iconic coastal property in Port Ellen. The transformation involved the complete refurbishment of the former Islay Hotel into a 12-bedroom destination retreat infused with Ardbeg’s distinctive character and rich heritage.

A key feature of the project was the contribution from TJL’s manufactured joinery division, which crafted a wide range of bespoke items in-house for the hotel’s uniquely styled bedrooms. Across the three tiers of guest rooms – House, Superior, and Premium – the team delivered handcrafted headboards, wardrobes, desks, and bedside tables, each designed to reflect the bold and playful spirit of Ardbeg.

“We’re honoured to bring our extensive experience and craftsmanship to this exciting project,” said Kevin Pick, Commercial Director at Thomas Johnstone Ltd. “Ardbeg has been part of Islay’s history since 1815, and we’re proud to have contributed to this next chapter by helping create a space that reflects its unique legacy and spirit on the island.”

In addition to the guest rooms, Ardbeg House features a whisky cave, games area, courtyard bar, and ground-floor restaurant – all finished to TJL’s signature standard of quality and attention to detail. Every space has been thoughtfully designed and constructed to celebrate the rugged charm of Islay, while offering contemporary comfort to guests from around the world.

This project adds to TJL’s growing portfolio of high-end hospitality refurbishment work, further showcasing the company’s ability to deliver excellence in complex, design-led environments.
