One of Scotland’s leading craft distilleries has introduced a new rum with flavours inspired by the Scottish Highlands.

Badachro Distillery, situated on the northwest coast of Scotland, has launched Surfing Puffin Rum, a companion spirit to its award-winning Dancing Puffin Vodka.

It is already being acclaimed as one of the country’s finest, having been shortlisted as one of only three spirits in the International Blended Rum category of the 2024 Scottish Rum Awards.

Managing director Gordon Quinn said: “There has been an explosion in the popularity of rum in the UK over the last couple of years, and after over a year of experimentation we are delighted to be bringing Surfing Puffin to the market.

“A little over a year ago, we started experimenting with rum – trying different blends and botanicals to find a flavour that truly represented Badachro.

“We initially thought we might produce a dark rum, but after trying various different recipes it was the golden rum that really felt like it belonged alongside the rest of our spirits.”

Vatting together three specially selected, imported barrel-aged rums from the Caribbean, the team at Badachro Distillery gives its rum a distinctly Highland flavour by infusing the spirit with local heather and myrtle, as well as Seville orange.

“The result is a golden rum that’s perfect for pairing with mixers or adding to cocktails,” said Gordon.

He explained: “There are a lot of very sweet rums on the market just now, but we wanted to create something a little different. Surfing Puffin is by no means a dry rum, but its subtle sweetness balances nicely with popular sugary mixers like cola or ginger beer.

“It’s also fantastic in cocktails, allowing you to make a nice Scottish twist on classics like a mojito or daiquiri.”

Surfing Puffin Rum, with an alcohol content of 40%, is available to trade customers via Badachro Distillery’s UK distributors and export partners, as well as directly from the distillery itself.

It is priced using the same model as its sister spirit, Dancing Puffin Vodka, making it ideal for bars and shops nationwide.

Consumers can buy Surfing Puffin directly from Badachro Distillery in 70cl bottles priced at £33.50, and in 5cl tasters for £6.00.

Each bottle features a hand-dipped wax seal. The rum is also available in shops and bars throughout the country.

Located in the western Scottish Highlands, Badachro Distillery produces a range of uniquely handcrafted whiskies, gins, vodkas, and rums, renowned for their bold, complex flavours that entice repeat enjoyment.

The distillery is best known for its Badachro Gin, Dancing Puffin Vodka, and Bad na h-Achlaise single malt Scotch whisky, alongside other exceptional craft spirits.

The distillery is a genuine family enterprise, founded by Gordon and Vanessa Quinn, who met at the Badachro Inn and married just 12 weeks later.

After travelling the world together, they returned to Badachro to pursue their dream of establishing a distillery.
