Hat trick of new business wins for Maison Dieu Coffee Roasters

Maison Dieu Coffee Roasters John Souttar and Euan Spark

MAISON Dieu Coffee Roasters, set up and run by footballers John Souttar and Euan Spark, are toasting to a successful year one in business as they welcome a hat-trick of wholesale customers on board, fueling expansion plans for 2023.

The roasting business that also sells online and direct to the public from their premises in Brechin, has signed deals with their first Edinburgh customer, Fitzroy Café; Cafe Noir in Stonehaven; and their biggest customer to date, holiday park Billing Aquadrome in Northamptonshire.

The site, part of Royale Resorts who have another 40 parks across the UK, is set in 235 acres with over 2000 lodges making the park the second largest holiday park in the UK. This partnership with Maison Dieu signals the first time Billing Aquadrome have introduced speciality coffee to their customers.

Euan Spark, co-founder, Maison Dieu, said: “There are less than 30 coffee roasters in Scotland, and we are only one of two in Angus that roast our own beans on site, roasting from green in our top of the range 10kg toper roaster.  We have really established ourselves in Angus & Tayside and the North East, supplying customers across the area, roasting and serving over 100,000 cups of coffee in year one.

“The partnership Fitzroy marks our expansion into the central belt, a signicafant growth milestone for is. Billing Aquadrome is our first customer south of the border and  particularly significant is that this is the first of any of the Royale Resort to move away from using from big chain named coffee.”

John Souttar co-founded the business in November 2021 with Euan, along with his wife Kayley and brother Harry Souttar.

John said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better first year in business, It’s been non-stop. Euan and I underwent intensive training courses to learn about roasting beans, how to become a proficient barista and sustainability within the industry. Since then, we’ve worked closely with cafes and business in the area showing the work that goes into making specialty coffee. From supplying our coffee beans to training, we are on a mission to educate about great tasting coffee.”

From their Brechin roasting premises, Maision Dieu also operates a highly popular takeaway window serving home-baked cakes and toasties, employing local high school pupils as baristas. However, company’s growth lies within the wholesale and online sales market.

Euan Spark said: “Enjoying great tasting coffee made at home is a necessity, not a luxury for many people. Buying specialty beans online, that are roasted and can also be ground, right here in Brechin and delivered direct is an area that we are seeing a massive uptick in. Our monthly subscriptions are also incredibly popular and have seen a 70% increase over the past six months.

“This is just the begging for Maison Dieu. We’ve got big plans and expansion is very much a key focus for our year two strategy as we increase our wholesale market share and develop our direct-to-consumer offering.”

Going over and above Fair-Trade standards, Maison Dieu deals directly with specific farms to ensure growers get the right price, taking pride in the fact their beans are ethically sourced and can be traced right back to the farms and farmers that grew them.

Sustainability is one of their main core values and all coffee bags are biodegradable and can be returned to Maison Dieu to be composted. Wholesale customers are also given refillable buckets to help reduce the amount of waste.
