Roti King, one of London’s most loved Malaysian street food spots, is heading north for the first time – opening a new restaurant just off Princes Street in the heart of Edinburgh this December.

Known for its theatre-style open kitchens and authentic flavours, the Edinburgh outpost will bring the sights, sounds, and aromas of Malaysia’s bustling street markets to the capital’s cobbled streets. Guests can watch chefs hand-stretch and flip roti canai to order before it’s served with dhal, chicken, mutton, or fish kari – the restaurant’s signature dish and a cult favourite across its London sites.

Other menu highlights include Char Kway Teow, wok-fried rice noodles with prawns and egg, and Malaysian fried chicken – marinated in garlic, ginger, and lemongrass before being crisped with cornstarch and rice flour, served with a fiery homemade sambal.

In keeping with Roti King’s trademark design approach, the new space will retain elements of the original building, incorporating exposed brickwork and a lovingly restored façade. Bespoke murals and graffiti, inspired by Malaysia’s vibrant streets, will celebrate the craftsmanship and heritage behind the restaurant’s dishes.

Roti King was founded by chef Sugen Gopal, who began his British culinary journey in 2004 with a small kiosk in Colindale’s Oriental City. After years of dedication, pop-ups, and residencies, he opened the first Roti King in Euston a decade later – now joined by sites in Waterloo, Battersea, and Spitalfields. This year, Gopal also released his debut cookbook, Roti King: Malaysian Street Food at Home, sharing the recipes and stories behind his success.

Following recent launches in Brighton and Spitalfields, the Edinburgh opening marks Roti King’s next step in a nationwide expansion designed to bring authentic Malaysian food to cities with strong independent dining cultures.

Ganan Kanagathurai, CEO of Roti King, said: “Roti King has always been about more than food. It’s about the emotional connection between people, culture, and community. We’re excited to be part of Edinburgh’s incredible independent food scene and to share the passion and creativity of Malaysia with a city that appreciates honest, authentic, flavourful food.”

As part of its commitment to community, Roti King will partner with Edinburgh charity Children 1st this winter. From December to February, donations made to the restaurant’s giving tree will be matched with food contributions, helping local children and families enjoy a warm meal or take part in roti-making sessions with the team.
