A rare 35-year-old Glenburgie single malt Scotch Whisky (70cl/45.1% ABV) from the Speyside region has been named Best Scotch Speyside Single Cask Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards at a gala dinner at The Waldorf, London, on 26 March.
Edition One is the first bottled Scotch Whisky in cask investment company Whisky 1901’s independent bottling range – The Collection – launched last year.
The Glenburgie no.14483, an ex-bourbon cask distilled 4th October 1988, faced three other winners from Speyside in the following categories – No Age Statement, 12 Years & Under and 13-20 Years Old – to be named Best Scotch Speyside Single Cask Single Malt.
Commenting on the win, Aaron Damiano Sparkes, Founder and CEO of Whisky 1901, said, “To say we’ve over the moon to see Edition One of The Collection win this award is no exaggeration. We could never have predicted the success our first independently bottled Scotch Whisky would achieve. And we’re thrilled to see our follow up bottle in the range – Edition Two – bringing in awards too.”
Prior to winning Best Scotch Speyside Single Cask Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards, The Collection: Edition One won a gold medal and was selected as the category winner in the Single Cask Single Malt—Speyside 21 Years and Over category of the World Whiskies Awards Scotland 2025, which took place at the Signet Library in Scotland, Edinburgh, on 5 December 2024.
Recognition at the World Whiskies Awards 2025 follows several earlier accolades for Whisky 1901’s first independently bottled Scotch Whisky. Last year Edition One won a silver medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, gold in The Spirits Business Luxury Masters 2004 in the Scotch Whisky – Ultra Premium category, gold in The Spirits Business Scotch Whisky Masters 2024 – Single Malt: Speyside – Aged Over 31 Years category, and bronze in the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC). Whisky Magazine named it one of the best whiskies tasted by Whisky Magazine in 2024.
Diversifying from its core cask investment business, Whisky 1901 launched its independent bottling line – The Collection – in June 2024. Single malt Scotch produced by Glenburgie, or ‘valley of the fort’ from Scots Gaelic, is rarely seen on the market. Only 263 numbered bottles of Edition One, the highly collectable 35-year-old Scotch are available to purchase online.
Echoing the success of the first bottle in the range, Edition Two – the Jura – was awarded bronze in the Single Cask Single Malt—Islands (non-Islay) category in the World Whiskies Awards Scotland 2025. Another rare and highly sought after Scotch Whisky, only 256 bottles of the 25-year-old Jura single malt (70cl/55.8% ABV) from the Scottish Islands region will be available to purchase later this year.
“As a whisky cask investment company first and foremost, we’re fortunate in being able to source some of the finest casks of single malt whisky across the five whisky regions of Scotland for our 300 plus investment clients. Some casks are from well-known distilleries, others from distinguished hidden gems. Our independent bottling line – The Collection – enables us to share some of these special casks with a wider audience – not just investors but connoisseurs of the finest whiskies,” continued Aaron.
Whisky 1901 will showcase The Collection Edition One and Two at the forthcoming Whisky Live event in London on the 28and 29 March. Visitors will also be able to sample from some of the company’s finest casks: an 18-year-old Miltonduff, a nine-year-old Tomatin and a nine-year-old Glen Moray. Flavour and profile of The Collection: Edition One
Whisky 1901’s Master of Whisky and Keeper of the Quaich, Matt Chambers, noted: “This vintage Speyside single malt Scotch whisky is packed with aromas of vanilla and
butterscotch and luscious, juicy tropical fruit. Hints of earthy spice linger in the
background.
On the palate this whisky feels soft and oily in texture. Fruity notes are to the fore with peach compote, apricot jam, and crisp green apple evident. Further sweetness comes with notes of milk chocolate, vanilla fudge, and toffee. Savoury elements add balance in the form of delicate baking spice and gingerbread. The combination of characteristics is sublime.”
