Ullapool-based Highland Liquor Co. has secured a Silver Medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2026 for its Seven Crofts Fisherman’s Strength Gin, marking a significant achievement for the Highland distillery on the global stage.

The IWSC, founded in 1969 by Anton Massel, is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious wine and spirits competitions. It brings together expert judging panels made up of leading industry professionals, including buyers, importers, distributors and specialists involved in the production and service of spirits.

Entries are assessed through a rigorous double-blind tasting process, with samples served in pre-poured, numbered glasses to ensure complete impartiality. Each spirit is evaluated collectively, allowing judges to engage in detailed discussion before awarding scores on a 100-point scale.

The competition spans seven core categories – Gin, Scotch Whisky, Worldwide Whisky, Rum, Agave, Vodka and Other Spirits – with Silver medals awarded to entries scoring between 90 and 94 points.

Seven Crofts Fisherman’s Strength Gin impressed judges with its balance and complexity. Tasting notes highlighted a sweet “vegetal aroma” alongside “sharp saline slate and fresh juniper, softened by delicate florals”. On the palate, the gin was praised for its balanced sweetness, gentle spice and subtle citrus notes, leading to a smooth, well-integrated finish.

Commenting on the award, Robert Hicks, co-owner of Highland Liquor Co., said: “Winning a silver medal for Seven Crofts Fisherman’s Strength Gin is wonderful news. It continues to help us showcase our products and allows our small artisan distillery to reach a broader international audience, as well as opening doors to potential new customers across the globe.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work of our team and an endorsement of the quality of what we produce, handcrafted spirits that are distinctive and characterful, with a story rooted in the place where they are made.”

The accolade further strengthens Highland Liquor Co.’s growing reputation within the international spirits market, shining a spotlight on Ullapool as a producer of premium, character-driven gin.
