A single malt produced at an artisan Scottish distillery has been named as category winner in the Speyside’s best non age statement whisky category. SPEY from Speyside Distillery’s Tenne cask-strength release was awarded the title as part of the internationally renowned World Whiskies Awards, amidst stiff competition.

The small team at Speyside Distillery, in production near Kingussie since 1990, is delighted at the accolade.

Tenne cask-strength is a newly released version of one of SPEY’s five core single malt expressions, with the orginal 46% version being the “calling card” whisky to introduce the SPEY range.  Tenne cask strength is initially aged in bourbon barrels and then finished in Tawny Port casks to give it a very distinctive rich red hue and a sweet finish.

John McDonough, chief executive officer of Speyside Distillery, said the accolade was a testament to the skill and attention to detail shown by the team at the distillery, which produces just 13,200 litres of spirit every week

“All of our success is down to a small but highly skilled team which is completely dedicated to creating something truly amazing. They are not distillers, but expert craftsmen who put years of knowledge and passion into creating every drop.

“Their abilities – passed down through generations of their families – are second to none in the industry and this award just serves to underline what the tens of thousands of customers around the world who buy our whisky already know.

“This accolade is incredibly special to us, not just for what it signifies, but because Tenne was the first expression that helped to establish the SPEY from Speyside Distillery brand. Known as a light and aromatic whisky that is easy to drink,18 000 bottles of Tenne are sold in the global marketplace every year.”

Speyside Distillery may be one of the smallest in the region but punches well above its weight in terms of its impact. Prior to the launch of the SPEY from Speyside Distillery brand in 2014, the distillery had no real international trade to speak of, but its products are now available in 34 different countries.

Managing director Patricia Dillon said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this accoldae and see it as an honour not just for our team, but for the extended SPEY family and all of our customers who buy our products.

“What makes the achievement all the more remarkable is that we are a small player in the whisky industry. We produce in such small quantities, but that is also our key strength. We are agile and adaptable: our independence also enables us to experiment with our stock and indeed it was this approach to innovation that led to the original Tenne release.

Speyside Distillery has been in production since 1990 and is operated by Speyside Distillers Ltd.
