Food Standards Scotland (FSS) has issued a critical public health warning, advising consumers not to consume any products from Alloa-based Soupbox Meal Prep, a company that claimed to supply prominent Scottish football clubs including Celtic, Heart of Midlothian, and Glasgow City. The directive comes after an investigation raised significant concerns over “inadequate food safety controls throughout the company’s production process,” deeming all its products a potential risk to health.
The FSS, a non-ministerial department of the Scottish Government, is tasked with safeguarding public health in Scotland by ensuring food safety, upholding food standards, and promoting healthy eating. Its responsibilities extend to developing food policies, advising on nutrition and labelling, and overseeing the regulatory and enforcement strategies for food businesses across the nation.
Stuart McAdam, FSS Head of Incidents, underscored the severity of the situation. “If you have purchased products or pre-prepared meals from Soupbox Meal Prep, do not take the risk of consuming them,” McAdam stated. “Although the business has now ceased producing hot and cold food, we are urging anyone who may have frozen meals to take immediate action. Food Standards Scotland exists to protect consumers, and it is vital that all food businesses comply with the legal standards designed to keep food and consumers safe.”
The incident highlights the critical importance of stringent food safety protocols within the rapidly expanding meal prep sector. The prepared meals market in the United Kingdom was valued at approximately $7.91 billion in 2023, with projections indicating a rise to $10.49 billion by 2028, driven by consumer demand for convenience. While the broader ready-to-eat market is experiencing growth, robust regulatory oversight, and adherence to food hygiene standards are paramount to maintain consumer trust and prevent health risks.
Under Scottish food law, businesses are legally obligated to ensure that all food placed on the market is safe, meets expected quality standards, and is accurately labelled, including comprehensive allergen information. The FSS provides guidance and monitors local authorities to ensure effective and proportionate enforcement of these laws.

This event serves as a reminder of past food safety issues that have prompted recalls and warnings in the UK, ranging from undeclared allergens and incorrect use-by dates to instances of contamination. Such incidents, including a recent Listeria outbreak linked to desserts and Salmonella contamination in chicken products, underscore the continuous need for vigilance within the food supply chain to protect public health.
Soupbox Meal Prep described itself on its website and social media as a “meal company, providing healthy freshly prepared meals with a modern twist,” with a background in fine dining. The company’s claims of supplying high-profile football clubs likely lent an image of quality and reliability, making the FSS warning particularly impactful for consumers who may have trusted these assertions.
Food Standards Scotland has confirmed that Soupbox Meal Prep has been contacted for comment regarding the warning.
