With a Brazilian Head Chef at the helm, it’s little wonder that El Santo Latin American Restaurant in Glasgow’s Merchant City is getting really excited about the forthcoming FIFA World Cup which will see Scotland play Brazil in Miami on 24 June.
With Head Chef, Juliana Kipper, currently busy advising the Honorary Consul for Brazil on food at the official World Cup fan zone at Arta, in Glasgow, as well as presenting her latest menu at El Santo, she is expecting even more interest than normal in the vibrant and colourful cuisine of her homeland.
To celebrate what is sure to be a memorable tournament, El Santo has decided to hold two celebrity nights which will see it remain open until 1am. The first of these, International World Cup Night, on Friday 12 June, 7pm- 1am, sees the space come alive with a live DJ set, full bar, and cocktails inspired by various countries taking part in the World Cup. Last food orders are 930pm.
Then, at the same times on Friday 19 June, the night of the Scotland versus Morocco game, After Dark Evening kicks off with more signature World Cup cocktails, together with card & board games, to create a fun & relaxed atmosphere, before a live DJ set plays Latin, reggaeton, afro house, and commercial sounds. Once again, food is available to order until 930pm.

“These evenings are not about watching the football, they are to celebrate and symbolise the energy of the World Cup tournament, inviting people from different cultures, countries and backgrounds to come together in one exciting space,” said El Santo Operations Manager, Denny Norris. “It’s the feeling of being surrounded by people from everywhere, all sharing the same moment.”
“We see the atmosphere at El Santo across both evenings as being driven by music and the crowd,” he added. These are evenings that will start slow and then build.”
Denny went on to say that El Santo had “kept it casual, with no fixed seating, although tables can be reserved. It’s best to arrive early to secure your space. We’ll also welcome walk-ins both evenings.”
The World Cup cocktails, specially crafted for the two evenings by Artur Oganan, are, in Denny’s words, “sure to grab the attention.” These include the “Maradona,” a mix of Fernet Branca, Cola Cordial & Three Cents cherry soda, the “Green Keeper,” showcasing Midori, Yuzu Liquer, Lime & Mr. Bitters Foamer, and the dramatic “Azteca After Dark”, with Pensador Mezcal, Falernum, Peach brandy, Mole negro paste & Choco bitters.
Denny finished by saying: “Juliana’s incredible food legacy has been greatly celebrated in the last few weeks, with her role with the Brazilian consul attracting media attention. The World Cup is the perfect excuse, if one were needed, to showcase El Santo as a vibrant, inclusive venue where everybody can mix and enjoy themselves.”
The current El Santo Menu features dishes such as Peruvian Chicken Anticuchio, chicken thigh meat with Latin spices, charred peppers, onion, and farofa on the side, Peruvian pork stir fry, with peppers, onion, soy sauce, ginger, chilli and coriander, and charcoal grilled sea bream with pickled fennel and a Mezcal infused coriander bisque. Steaks include the classic Brazilian cut of Picanha, with a Châteaubriand designed for sharing, and a butcher’s selection featuring the prime cuts of the day.
