Award-winning hospitality operator Buzzworks has announced plans to bring The Douglas Hotel in Brodick into its growing portfolio, marking a significant step in the group’s expansion into the accommodation sector.
Situated on Brodick seafront, The Douglas has been welcoming residents and visitors to the Isle of Arran for more than 170 years and remains one of the island’s most recognisable and well-loved hotels.
The acquisition, subject to completion in mid-July, will see the hotel continue trading throughout the peak summer season before closing temporarily in autumn and winter for an extensive refurbishment. The revitalised venue is scheduled to reopen in spring 2027.
Following a major seven-figure investment, The Douglas will join Buzzworks’ premium House Collection. Plans will see the historic property transformed into a contemporary pub, restaurant and rooms destination, designed to offer a high-quality eat, drink and stay experience in keeping with the island’s appeal.
The move builds on Buzzworks’ strong presence along the Ayrshire coast, where venues including Scotts and Lido in Troon, and Vic’s & The Vine in Prestwick, have established loyal followings among locals and visitors alike. With Arran clearly visible from the Ayrshire shoreline, the addition of The Douglas represents a natural geographic and cultural extension for the business.
Targeting a wide range of guests – from staycation visitors and golf groups to families and business travellers – the redeveloped hotel will feature 21 redesigned bedrooms, a vibrant open-plan bar and restaurant, and enhanced outdoor spaces suitable for year-round use.
The refurbishment will be led by acclaimed designer Jim Hamilton, with a focus on blending the building’s heritage with Buzzworks’ signature style. The design approach will emphasise timeless interiors, quality materials and a strong sense of place, reflecting Arran’s unique character.
Kenny Blair, CEO at Buzzworks, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming The Douglas into Buzzworks. This is an iconic hotel with a fantastic reputation, and we are proud to be taking this special place forward and building on its legacy.
“This investment allows us to build on what The Douglas already offers, whether guests are coming in for a casual drink, a meal in the restaurant, or an overnight stay. We know how much this hotel means to the island, and we’re keen to honour what’s already here while bringing our own passion for great hospitality to it.”
As part of the transition, all existing team members at The Douglas will join the wider Buzzworks business. The company has confirmed its commitment to supporting staff throughout the process, with future opportunities for training, development and career progression when the hotel reopens.
