Aldi’s Portobello store is preparing to welcome Fringe visitors from around the world after being recognised as an authentic food and drink destination, thanks to the hundreds of Scottish products stocked on its shelves.
As millions descend on Edinburgh for the summer festival season, the supermarket has emerged as an unexpected addition to the city’s visitor itinerary. Aldi Portobello is now one of only a small number of supermarkets in Scotland to appear among Edinburgh’s top Things To Do listings on Tripadvisor, placing it alongside some of the capital’s best-known attractions.
The recognition reflects the store’s broad Scottish range, offering visitors the opportunity to seek out food and drink from producers across the country while in the capital.
Aldi said it topped the National Farmers Union’s largest-ever supermarket shelf study for Scottish own-label sourcing in 2026, with an average of 65% of its own-label products identified as being of Scottish origin – ahead of other major retailers.
Festival-goers browsing the Portobello aisles can find products from a host of familiar Scottish suppliers, including Equi’s ice cream, made with Scottish milk and cream; locally grown fruit from Angus Soft Fruits; and baked favourites from Brownings.
To mark its new Tripadvisor status, Aldi is also giving away limited-edition Edinburgh Fringe postcards. The free postcards are designed to offer visitors a light-hearted way to share their favourite festival moments and Scottish food discoveries with friends and family.
Alan Leslie, Buying Director at Aldi Scotland, said: “The Edinburgh Fringe welcomes millions of visitors from around the world each year, and for many, trying Scotland’s fantastic food and drink is an essential part of the experience.
“We’re proud to work with so many Scottish suppliers to bring high-quality local produce to our shelves, so it’s fantastic that our Portobello store has been listed as somewhere visitors can enjoy an authentic taste of Scotland.
“Whether people are stopping by to sample some of Scotland’s finest produce, picking up essentials before a show or sending one of our limited-edition postcards home to share the excitement of the Fringe, we’re looking forward to welcoming festival visitors through our doors.”
