Merchant City venue plans family daytime event and evening fiesta on October 31st.

El Santo in Glasgow’s Merchant City will host a two-part celebration for Dias de los Muertos, Mexico’s version of Halloween, on Saturday 31st October. Also known as Day of the Dead, the traditional celebration, usually observed from November 2nd to 4th, offers a more joyful and celebratory atmosphere than Halloween. Mexicans traditionally don flamboyant costumes to parade through the streets, followed by three days of feasting and drinking in honour of their dear departed relatives. Candy skulls are exchanged, and Mexican households build altars bedecked with orange Chrysanthemum flowers, at which they pray and remember their dead, placing photographs, mementos and whimsical rhymes they have written about them onto the altars.

The daytime celebrations at El Santo, held between 2pm and 5pm, are designed for families. Children will have the opportunity to have their faces painted in traditional Mexican style. Colouring sheets that explain the story of Dias de los Muertos will also be available, keeping children occupied while adults can enjoy El Santo’s special October menu. A children’s menu will also be available.

In the evening, the focus shifts to an adult Fiesta, starting at 5pm, which will feature dancers and a DJ. The event promises an incredible atmosphere coupled with signature cocktails. Ester Moraes, Marketing Manager for El Santo, commented: “Halloween is a big event on the calendar for all ages nowadays. With this in mind, we are very pleased to be ticking the box for families during the day with a fun event which explains more about the origins of Day of the Dead, and an evening celebration which will feature what we call true “Baile Latino”, which translates as Latin American Dancing.”

Moraes added: “Many of our regular customers love to dress up and indulge in their Gothic side, and Day of the Dead is something that certainly fits the bill for that, although with a more joyful undercurrent than traditional Halloween. We are inspired by all things Latin American here, and have a solid base of performers who love to come in and entertain us, wearing elaborate costumes. If you want to dress up, you’re more than welcome. Please look out your costumes and dress to impress.”

The wide choice on El Santo’s October menu includes tableside guacamole, crispy Chicharron – crackling pork skin seasoned with El Santo’s signature spices and served with fresh salsa – small plates and tacos, beef tartar, roasted bone marrow & picanha steak from the charcoal grill. Signature Latin cocktails, such as Spicy Mango Margaritas and Guava Caipirinhas, will also be available. Further information can be found at www.elsanto.co.uk.
