Thistle Street venue cites men’s mental health events among most popular

SOBR Bar, which describes itself as Scotland’s first and only entirely alcohol-free cocktail bar and events space, is marking its first year of operation. Located on Thistle Street in Aberdeen, the venue opened in October 2025 as a self-funded concept by local entrepreneur Kate Kenyon. The 22-seat boutique bar specialises in alcohol-free creations made with local independent suppliers and premium zero-proof spirits.

The venue said it won the “Jump Ship Brewing Best Lo and No Destination” award at the DRAM Magazine Scottish Bar and Pub Awards 2026. This followed SOBR being named a “Trailblazer in the Low & No Alcohol Category” at the UK Enterprise Awards 2026. The bar also said it received shortlistings at the Great British Pub Awards 2026 and is a finalist at next month’s Anthea Awards at The Beach Ballroom.

“As a small, independent business trying something completely new in the city – and the country – this first year has been incredible, a real rollercoaster, but one that has been defined by our customers who have found in SOBR something that was badly needed,” said Kate Kenyon, founder of SOBR Bar. “We’re a safe, inclusive, non-judgemental, space where they can relax and enjoy zero drinks that are curated with thought and attention to detail.”

“To win Best Zero bar in Scotland means the world to us, as does being recognized nationally as a trailblazer – it’s so exciting!” continued Kate. “We set out to prove that memorable social experiences don’t rely on alcohol, just great company, a welcoming atmosphere and exceptional taste. The response from the people of Aberdeen and beyond has been incredibly validating.”

Kenyon said events championing men’s mental health have been the most popular and reviewed at the venue. “It’s so important that men can have support, and a place where they can open up freely to others,” she said.

The bar recently launched a new menu, The Functional Edit – A New Destination for Mindful Drinking, featuring twelve serves incorporating ingredients such as lion’s mane mushroom, lemon balm and butterfly pea flour. According to the release, guests can choose drinks based on how they want to feel, with serves including colour-changing effects, flambéed finishes, smoke, bespoke ice and curated garnishes.

Looking ahead, SOBR said it plans to continue collaborating with local, independent partners and take the brand to pop-up events and festivals across Scotland and beyond. The company is also working to make its drinks available for people to enjoy at home.
